Official Class of 2020 Northeastern University Early Decion/Early Action Discussion

@Bostonian378 I saw a couple years back that they traditionally release the third Thursday of December. I don’t know if they still do that.

Last year they came out on Tuesday, 12/16/2014. The year before they were released on Tuesday 12/17/2013.

I wouldn’t read too much into the fact that both years were Tuesdays. They are more likely released when they are ready to release them and it is no more scientific than that.

Anyone from VN applying to Northeastern? I have just received my October’s scores last week and still waiting for it to be sent to the university, pretty nervous actually :stuck_out_tongue:

Hi guys! I applied Early Decision to Northeastern majoring in entrepreneurship and innovation.

I have a low cumulative GPA of about 3.5 (without my senior first quarter grades) but that’s because I did EXTREMELY poorly my freshman year. Freshman year, my GPA was a 3.17 and my senior year quarter grades (I sent them to NU) is a 4.06. I’ve improved every semester and my classes have constantly become much more rigorous throughout the years. I’m hooping my really strong upward trend and all A’s this year will show my improvement and hard work. Also, I go to a really rigorous high school and the college admissions officer is aware of how challenging my school is.

I’ve taken three SATs but my November SATs aren’t available yet. I think I did much better on the November SAT, but so far, my super score SAT is at a 1830. Hopefully my November test scores are better!

I have a lot of strong extracurriculars.

  • I’ve been a competitive figure skater since I was 5 years old
  • I’m working towards my private pilot’s license (started junior year)
  • I had a really cool business internship in Hawaii last summer
  • I went abroad sophomore year and participated in ten hours of community service in Puerto Rico and helped build houses
  • I’m a FBLA member
  • I started my own club this year
  • I’m a defense witness for my school’s mock trial team since junior year
  • I was on the varsity swim team freshman and sophomore year
  • I’ve been mentoring and tutoring elementary students all four years
  • I tutor my older brother (he’s autistic) specifically with math and Spanish

Freshman Year:

  • Algebra I (summer)
  • Geometry
  • Patterns of Civilizations
  • Introduction to Physics
  • English I
  • Spanish I
  • Dance I
  • GPA: 3.17

Sophomore Year:

  • Algebra II (summer)
  • Pre-Calculus
  • Modern World History
  • Chemistry
  • Spanish II
  • English II
  • GPA: 3.56

Junior Year:

  • Calculus
  • AP Economics
  • Honors Biology
  • AP United States History
  • English III
  • Spanish III
  • GPA: 3.83

Senior Year:

  • AP Statistics
  • AP Psychology
  • Global Markets/Financial Literacy
  • Spanish IV
  • Ceramics
  • English IV/Advanced Composition
  • GPA: 4.06

I think I have strong recommendations, a good college essay, and I’ve definitely demonstrated interest in the school. I also think applying Early Decision really helped my chances of getting in.

I’m from Southern California and Northeastern is literally the school of my dreams. I’ve visited the school twice and I know it’s the right fit for me. I’m literally counting down the days until December 15th! Please let me know what you think my chances are!

GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE WHO APPLIED! <3

@16sadeghik Both your SAT and GPA are below the 25th percentile for Northeastern. I would not get my hopes too high but with that said, there’s always a chance. College decisions are often hard to predict and can depend vary from student to student. Good Luck!

@dyu12345 Thank you!! :slight_smile:

3 more weeks everyone! Good luck!

Last year many applicants were offered admission through the NUIn program. About half of those applicants reporting that decision here on CC had no idea what that was. They had not read the viewbook or website very well. Acceptance to the NUIn program cannot be changed to regular Fall admission. Here is a description of the program.

http://www.northeastern.edu/nuin/about/index.html

Woohoo! My SAT score just came out! 1940  I hope that increases my chances!

@nanotechnology That is actually great to hear! The biggest reason that I was unsure about the program is because on other forums, I have heard it is a combination between psych and bio, and not really it’s own distinct program. This could be an outdated or just uninformed opinion, though. If you didn’t find that the courses were just a hashed up mixture of bio and psych requirements when you were in the program, then you are probably still right.

I also heard that there wasn’t much research in terms of neurology at the university, and that most students had to search elsewhere in Boston for research opportunities. What did you specifically research during your undergrad years? Also, were you one of the few neuro students to work in the lab, or were there many opportunities to go around for everybody in the program?

@alyssa182 - neuroscience is a mixture of psych and bio, in a sense, and Northeastern’s program is part of both departments. I think the result is more flexibility rather than feeling cobbled together. There are both bio and psych courses, of course. At a lot of universities I visited when I was looking for schools, the neuro major Feld like environment a bio major with a few brain-related classes tossed in. Northeastern’s program does a good job of taking you all the way from microbiology to behavior to understand how the brain works.

For research, when you say “neurology,” do you mean clinical neurology research? Because Northeastern doesn’t have that; we don’t have a medical school that it would really be an option. With Harvard Medical school and the Longwood Medical Area right nearby, it’s definitely possible to do more clinical/neurology research on co-op. For my research, I worked in a motor neuroscience lab for 4 years studying human motor learning. I did one of my co-ops there as well. I also did a co-op at the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems in Germany, where I worked in a robotics lab studying dimensionality reduction in human movement compared to robots. I also did work on designing and implementing the nervous system for a robotic lobster at the Marine Science Center. In terms of the availability of opportunities, there’s plenty to go around. The big thing is to take initiative and contact a professor who’s research interests you. Most professors will be happy to take on an eager undergrad.

@TomSrOfBoston My brother had more or less the same academic profile as I do and he was accepted to NU.in, which I find a bit terrifying. I think it would be a great experience and I would do it in a heartbeat, but I’ve heard from so many people that the transition back to Boston in spring is quite difficult. The first semester of freshman year is this sort of “magical” time when everyone is open/new and meets each other and it can be hard to form new relationships and friendships that late in the year. I think that the best case scenario for me is getting accepted to NU.in (at the most) which I find depressing because Northeastern is my #1 choice. I hope I get accepted for the fall semester but I’m realistically only expecting as much as NU.in.

@Bostonian378 I posted that information only because so many applicants who are offered NUIn have no idea what it is although it is stated in the admissions info that it is a possible decision.

Looking through CC there are many students who find first semester to be a lonely time as they are in a large school in a new city and find it overwhelming. With NUIn you are in a group of no more than 100 people. There students usually form a core group of friends and acquaintances once back in Boston. You can branch out from there.

Hoping to be in the University Scholars Program. Do you think I have a chance?

@16sadeghik you might want to take the opportunity to email your regional admission rep about your new scores. I think you said you are applying ED and Northeastern’s cut off date for scores from ED applicants was 4 days ago according to the admissions page on the NEU website.

If they are still in the process of reading through applications (hopefully) it can’t hurt to be sure your regional rep is aware of your improvement and continued interest whether they will officially consider your new scores or not. All the best!

What if I want to go into the NUin program but don’t get in? Can we apply to go into the program if we don’t get in?

@halflokum I’m assuming that Northeastern will e-mail the decision, but just wanted to make sure. So do they e-mail you, or is it posted on the portal?

@halflokum Thanks! Yeah I emailed my regional admissions representative this morning. The website says they accept November SAT scores for early action candidates, but it doesn’t say anything for early decision candidates. Hopefully it is added to my application!

@obligatoryname my recollection is that you will get an email indicating that your application status check is now available and then you log in and check it. I’m sure @TomSrOfBoston who has commented on this process for years now can elaborate on the process in more reliable detail. My experience is that Northeastern rolls out their admission decisions geographically starting in Boston area then rolling out through the New England states and then points south and then moves west. It’s kind of fun to watch when you don’t care vs. when you are waiting anxiously. I’m a Northeastern grad as is my husband but only watched this whole thing happen in the last two years when my son got involved. In my day it was all handled via paper, stamps and the mail carrier.

We live on the west coast which is notified last and were traveling to Europe the day they rolled out. Son was literally hitting refresh on the plane we boarded late that evening until the final seconds on 12/17/13 before they announced to turn off all electronic devices. Minutes away from knowing. Needless to say it was a long and anxious flight from the west coast to Europe.

@16sadeghik glad you are on it. Wanted to be sure you knew that the deadline had passed and it might be worth your while to use this as a point of contact with your regional rep whom we found to be helpful. It sounds like if you have already visited twice and are invested in the school enough to apply ED. You’ve done all you can. The rest is up to the admissions gods and regardless of the outcome, you should feel confident. Nobody here can really chance you. I’m not sure what that even means and what one hopes to gain by asking. Perhaps comfort or a reality check and I get that. I do think showing strong interest is always a good thing. If by any chance you are also female… the program you are applying to is heavily male dominated and could use more women. All the best!

@halflokum

Your day was the same as mine!

You are correct about the decision announcement process. No decisions are released before 3 PM local time. And to waiting applicants it will do no good to call the admissions office to ask when decisions are being released, they will just tell you “by December 31st.” And yes preliminary merit/need based aid is announced at the same time.

If you applied ED and are offered NUIn admission, that is a non-binding offer.
