Official Class of 2020 Northeastern University Early Decion/Early Action Discussion

Upwards trend in GPA should help? But that SAT score will def hurt. @Bostonian378

Hey! I just found this thread. I applied EA. Here’s the link to my stats: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1830636-180-days-to-go-so-help-me-stay-sane-by-predicting-my-chances.html
I’m pretty much in love with their co-op program. I either applied for International Affairs or Political Science, I can’t remember specifically.
What aspects of NU did you guys like best?

Did anyone else get a call from a member of the admissions committee? I was left a message discussing the valuable assets of my application and am pretty excited about it. Anyone else have a similar experience?

What are your stats and did you do ED or EA

I’m a white female who applied ED to the College of Engineering.

SAT: 2100
Math: 660
Reading: 740
Writing: 700

GPA: 4.65/4
Rank: 17/310

Extracurriculars:
3 years JV XC
3 years varsity indoor/outdoor track
2 years track captain (current school record holder in PV)
4 years varsity debate
founder/president of poetry club
member of numerous other clubs
3 years volunteering with a children’s fitness association

I’ve taken an extremely demanding class schedule all four years of high school (all APs available) and have full faith that those who wrote my recommendations were wonderfully positive.

At the end of the phone call the member of the admissions committee gave me the name of my admissions counselor and told me to call if i had any questions or concerns.

Anyone applying to the 6-year pharm program? I am! I also applied EA

33 ACT
3.92 UW/we don’t have weighted
Non-ranking school but top 10%
Tons of leadership
Published scientific paper
Varsity sport and captain senior year
Lots of volunteering hours

by the time I graduate I’d have 11 AP courses and everything else is honors

@dyu12345 @themarchrabbit I’m applied EA for Pharm, too! I’m literally so scared… haha Maybe we should start a thread for the pharm applicants (if there isn’t one already, that is)

Good luck with the pharmacy program! I wasn’t actually aware that they had one, but that’s awesome and I wish you guys good luck!

@jumpingstar haha thats a cool idea maybe we should. I think with our scores, we will probably be admitted. I’m more scared about getting into the honors program :-S

Yes, I got one too.

@dyu12345 eh, Idk cause i feel like my 33 isnt that high for NU but your SAT is really good! and yeah, idk at all what the stats are for the honors program
I’ll start a pharmd thread and tag you in it

I’m a white female applying EA for Behavioral Neuroscience.

ACT: 35 (superscored)
GPA: 4.38/4 (w), our school doesn’t do unweighted but it’s appx 3.9/4
Rank: Not calculated but in the top 7%
ECs: 3rd degree black belt, tons of community service and leadership, 2 jobs, french club secretary, JV tennis, NHS, intersectional feminism club
APs: 4 by end of year, honors everything else since freshman year
Other: Legacy (from both M and D), great recs, well written but generic essay

Even though NEU is my top choice, I’ve heard their neuro program and research in that field are not the best. If anybody is also applying or has experience w/ their neuro program, it would be great to hear!

Good luck to everybody in the admissions process!

@alyssa182 - I just graduated these spring with a behavioral neuroscience major, and I was very heavily involved in research, so I’d be happy to answer any questions about those. What exactly did you hear about the neuro/research limitations?

My experience in the program was great. The degree requirements have changed since I started, so I can’t speak as well to the specific courses required now. But I was pleased with the choices I had and really appreciated the interdisciplenariness of it (is that a word? My phone thinks it is.) I also worked in the same research lab for 4 years and developed a fantastic relationship with a research mentor that really shaped my experience and helped me figure out what I wanted to do after graduation. In terms of the quality and types of research, northeastern has neuroscience research from molecular biology to human behavior to robotic lobsters. You even have a 1 credit class the first semester where professors come and introduce their research to freshmen.

Totally biased, but I really enjoyed my academic and research experience in the neuroscience program. I’ve had great success with fellowships and graduate school, and I give huge credit to northeastern for that.

Does NU put a cap on the number of kids accepted from one school?

^^No, no school has such a limit. That is a made up excuse by applicants who are denied.

My S HS routinely has over two dozen acceptances, so no limit.

But that doesn’t mean that Northeastern wouldn’t deliberately provide a path to admission for students that are from under represented parts of the country. Hypothetical decision with one remaining slot that is between two otherwise identical candidates and one is from Wyoming and the other from Mass could possibly favor Wyoming. As far as a cap from a school goes, no, that isn’t something worth worrying about unless you are talking about the UC system in California where it does actually exist as a factor.

Thanks for the advice @nishaus
My brother got into Northeastern (NU in) with an 1860 too so I hope it doesn’t hurt me too much

Does anybody know around when admissions decisions are released for Early Action? I know they said “by December 31st” but is it generally before then?

In the past EA decisions are released in mid December. You can search through old threads here on CC and find the exact date last year.
