Official Class of 2022 Applicants Discussion Thread

Good news!

NEW FOR 2018-2019: https://www.cmu.edu/dining/about-us/news/2018/meal-plan-changes.html

Beginning in the fall, the following changes will be implemented for the 2018-2019 traditional dining plans:
o Meal blocks will be allotted per semester instead of per a biweekly period. Meal blocks will not expire until the end of the semester.
o Up to two meal blocks can be used per meal period (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night), still with a cap of four blocks/swipes per day.

Does ur portal show that they have received your slip?

@WhartonFinancier No, it doesn’t show that they’ve received it. I am going to call their office tomorrow. Does anyone have any idea how much students they get off the waitlist during the summer? Is this hopeless waiting worth it?

Hello xx,

Thanks for your interest in Carnegie Mellon. We received your summer interest slip. I would advise you to move forward with the enrollment processes relevant to your chosen institution. It is unlikely that any openings will be available.

Please contact our office with any further concerns.

Best,

My understanding is they were inundated with criticism over how they tortured waitlisted students last month. I’m sure this is in part a response to that criticism.

But they sound defensive and are not being honest about what they did. A 500 word essay is not a “paragraph”

Whatever the reason, I am glad they are stopping all the nonsense. I assume this means no more zeemee bs either.

I’m skeptical as to CMU’s motivations, but I do like the changes. I’m skeptical because all these changes will likely result in a dramatic increase in applications, which will result in a dramatics reduction in the acceptance rate, making CMU appear more selective and increasing it’s position in the USNWR. I also wonder if it will make it easier for CMU to accept more international students (who are full pay). The school’s student body is already 22% international, which seems a bit high given the stats of students applying.

Making SAT subject tests optional, eliminating alumni interviews, and changing the essay structure will make it easier for many students to apply. Will these really result in “eliminating advantages that have been inherent in certain aspects of the admission process”, or will they simply encourage students that haven’t been interested in CMU enough in the past to go through the extra effort to now apply? I suspect that it will be a bit of both.

The waitlist nonsense really irritated me. To ask for even a paragraph for students on the WL or PWL was downright insulting. CMU should have plenty of information from their initial application to make a decision and should not expect their WL students to jump through any more hoops more complicated than clicking a button to indicate if they wish to remain on the WL.

Hey everybody. Does the final report downloaded on the common app means you are the student at CMU? Just curious. The Final Grade Report showed up in the Where Am I In The Process too

Out of curiosity, if anyone received priority waitlist status and was not denied during the Spring/early Summer, when did CMU sent rejections and officially close the class of 2022? My child still has not been officially rejected. Since freshman orientation starts this weekend, we will take the start of orientation as the rejection.

@Overtheline That seems strange. Colleges follow a best practices agreement from NACAC where they state they will officially close all waiting lists by August 1. But your teen can always call CMU and ask.
