I’ll have some tips that I gleaned from my conversation with the interviewer and other parts, but here’s a bit of miscellanea for now:

You will not necessarily get rejected if you don’t conform to the requested essay length. I attached an essay of over 1000 words where they requested 250-500.

Decision: Accepted

(Not just a likely, I didn’t get a likely, I got in, and UPS delivered it about 2 hours ago)

I’ll update this later with stats waiting on other april 1sts.

Goodluck to everyone!

ACCEPTED! :)

I’ll post stats later. CC just died.

ACCEPTED! :)

General Comments: I am BEYOND THRILLED to be waitlisted. I was expecting outright rejection, since im not the most competitive applicant academically and my essays weren’t very good. I have a feeling that my URM-ish status may have helped, and i now plan to put forth massive amounts of effort at expressing my love and devotion to the school in my waitlist letter. SO EXCITED! :D

Additional Rec: From a music teacher I’ve known since 6th grade.

Interview: Didn’t have one.

Other

State (if domestic applicant): NY (about an hour away from NYC)

Country (if international applicant):

School Type: Average public. Usually sends one or two to an ivy every year.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I’m not sure if this is considered legacy, but my grandfather went to med school there?

Reflection

Strengths: Definitely my essay.

Weaknesses: I suck at standardized testing.

Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My essay was amazing and it showed a lot about myself and really got to the mystery behind my desire to study physics.

Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Boston U, RPI, Northeastern. Waitlisted at Columbia, Carnegie Mellon. Rejected everywhere else- MIT, Stanford, Chicago, Tufts, Johns Hopkins, Princeton, Yale, Brown, Penn, Cornell.

General Comments: I am SO happy I didn’t get rejected. I have been rejected so many times in the past week, I could not take this one. Columbia is my 2nd choice, and 1 of the 2 schools I genuinely loved. As of 5:30, I took a spot on the waitlist and I will be revisiting Columbia and doing everything I possibly can to get a spot. This is really my last hope, because I really don’t want to go to BU and I love this school so much. I’m expecting yield to go way down this year for every school, so to anyone else who was waitlisted- we really do have a chance! To anyone who was rejected, take a look at my list of rejections. Trust me, I know how you feel, and it really sucks. But what we all need to remember in this whole crazy process is that we are the ones who have the motivation to join this site, apply to these schools, and do everything we can to succeed. We are the reason that schools like Columbia are so competitive, and as long as we don’t change, we will succeed, no matter where we are. Congratulations to everyone who was accepted! Hopefully, I will eventually join the class of 2014!!
