GlueEater - I put awe as well. Despair seemed too extreme, especially when the shadow was compared to Lincoln Memorial’s shadow…I don’t think the author really fleshed out such a nuanced opinion of Dennis like despair. It was pretty one-dimensional, that the children were just wowed by Dennis’ as the role model.

it was definitely dismay, not despair.

ohh, my bad. But my reasoning still stands, because it still would be 'dismay in his presense"

No, I believe it was awe because he was compared to the Lincoln memorial.

You wouldn’t be in dispair when viewing such a grand monument as the Lincoln Memorial.

but he wasnt really comparing him to the lincoln memorial. it was sarcastic. remember how the author added “…which he had visited three times” at the end? that made it not a true comparison.

So do you think it was dismay?

yes, i got dismay.

Hmmm. What do you think the curve for an 800 will be? -2? -3?

Could you explain your reasoning with the phrase “dismay in his presense”? Because that was the clincher for me when I was trying to decide between dismay and awe.

to me, “awe” is positive. like admire. but they didnt like the brother, he annoyed them. i think its dismay.

dictionary.com - dismay - dishearten thoroughly. i think this is what the brother did. he would come home and be so wonderful and the mom’s favorite child, etc etc, that the kids were rolling their eyes and unhappy with him. and the girl also degraded him a little, i think i remember.

awe - an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear…that just doesnt do it for me. they didnt want to be like the brother. and they didnt admire the brother. he annoyed them.

definitely not -3. maybe -2. its almost certain that -1 will be 800.

I put awe. The story never had a reference to Dennis being around the younger family members, and they didn’t dislike their brother, they were just annoyed with the fact that he was so successful. I eliminated dismay because if they felt dismay, it was both in and out of his presence. Awe- a feeling of reverential respect mixed with fear or wonder. It’s iffy but I think it’s awe

ummm… ok peeinthesink, I really think you are over thinking the question

i think -2 is fairly common for 800 on CR … -3 however is about as frequent as -1 in M
