anotherazn: hey, I was just wondering why bioengineering is relatively harder to get into at UIUC. THeir bioengineering program is really really new, and as a result it has pretty low rankings (24-28 ballpark). But why not apply Electrical Engineering straight up because it is rank 2 (tied with Stanford) for undergrad EE?

I’m just wondering, because I don’t understand why their bioengineering rank 28 is more competitive than their electrical engineering rank 2…

It is because it is new. Started five years ago and enrolls limited number of students, initially 25, slowly building toward 50. Conscious decison made early to accept during its developing period (still going on) only those with very high stats (typical middle 50% range ACT score is 34-35). The current national ranking is simply a reflection that it is new (they have only gotten to one graduating class), not its quality.

Intended Major/Department: Bioengineering - alternate choice, CHEM/BIOCHEM ENG - accepted
Major strength/weakness: Strength, girl in engineering field; Weakness, standardized tests (i missed national merit :\ )

Other Factors:
8 in school AP classes: Eng, Psych, Macroecon, US gov, Bio, Art History, Spanish, Calc BC

rejected from Stanford… UIUC ain’t half bad too.

p.s. where else is/did everyone apply to?
ME - cornell (legacy), columbia (legacy), Upenn, Johns Hopkins (maybe not), Franklin Olin. School of Engineering, UMich (maybe)

Congrats, Balthezar, I’ve seen you posting around here a lot and wish you the best of luck with ND. I’d love to go there but unfortunately I don’t have the money nor the stats. :D

First of all, I must confess, I thought I’d get rejected because my stats aren’t spectacular

[] Hook (if any): I’m not sure, but my sister attends UIUC however the application did not ask and therefore I did not inform them. I wonder if they know anyways… and maybe because I’m female? :O…I also visited the school at least 3 times but they only have a record of once… good enough since I live so far away
