Essays (rating 1-10, details): Overall Rate: 7
•My first essay was very personal and talked about how my mother is depressed and in Africa. My father is now the only one to take care of my brother and I so it’s hard with his low salary (<$30,000). It discussed the loss of my two oldest siblings when I was younger in Africa as well as the loss of my littlest brother here in America. Rate: 8
•The Why Duke essay was weaker, I chose to write on diversity and how I’ve been impacted and then proceeded to talk about the amazing undergraduate science program at Duke. Rate: 6

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Overall Rate: 9
•Teacher Rec #1: My favorite anatomy and physiology teacher wrote this, he was also my science fair mentor when I was in the 9th and 10th grade as well as the Science Olympiad coordinator. We have a very close relationship. Rate: 9
•Teacher Rec #2: My IB HOA Teacher during junior year, we had a good relationship and was always one of his most appreciated students. Rate: 8
•Counselor Rec: My International Baccalaureate Program Coordinator tailored mine to fit me on a more personal level, since she deals with less students then the regular counselors. Rate: 8

Interview: Rate: 9
•This went really well to me, I thought that I did a good job of showing my personality without talking about school related activities. Although I know the length doesn’t mean a lot, we spent 2 hours together just laughing about similarities between high school and college and then she reminisced while I told her what I was most excited about. She was fairly young (just graduated like 2 years ago) and we hit it off pretty well. Ewe even had a follow up phone call two days later.

** Reflection **
•Strengths: My ECs are very specific to what I enjoy and I have stayed very commited throughout the years. I did a good job of displaying me as a person in everything I wrote. Also due to the IB CAS requirement my volunteer hours are very developed and are activities I truly enjoy. My summers are also spent productively

•Weaknesses: My test scores are on the low end, I wish I had started testing sooner so I could have had more developed scores to submit to Duke ED. My grades and GPA were also not the highest despite my class rank percentage.

•Why you think you were rejected: My test scores are extremely low in comparison to a a lot of people and my writing comes across as cheesy and cliche to certain people (probably because I read/watch a lot of dramas). I also realize that my GPA is fairly low and definitely hurt me. I also lack AP credit and my one IB score thus far, is mediocre.

•Colleges I’ve been accepted to: Baylor University, University of Texas, Fordham University and Tulane University

•Colleges I’m applying still to: Emory University, Vanderbilt University and the University of Southern California

•General Comments: I’m going to be honest, I know that I have more weaknesses than strengths academically (especially compared to all the other posts I’ve read) but I really thought I had a good chance, especially since I am an under represented black female with a passion for science. But it just goes to show, anything can happen. I really wish I had at least gotten deferred, but hey, they call it a reach school for a reason. Congrats to everyone who was accepted, and to those who weren’t… like me… it’s alright! We’ll be fine and who knows maybe we’ll go to college, better ourselves, then transfer to Duke later! I know I’m going to try. It does definitely sting, but what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger! (Sorry to be so cliché and touchy I just really wanted to say those things). Okay Bye.
