[ul]
[] Strengths: SAT I, Duke supplements, legacy, additional rec, maybe extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: Math I score, GPA, not enough APs, lack of leadership roles in extracurriculars, Common App essay, Asian girl
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: honestly I think that compared to other Duke applicants, my legacy was not enough to boost me to the same level of excellence. I was honestly surprised to be flat-out rejected rather than deferred, though
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: accepted at Tulane, U of Pittsburgh [/ul]

**General Comments: I was really upset at first but I feel a lot better right now, and wanted to post this to help other future applicants. Of course being rejected is pretty painful but after some reflection I’m glad I have the opportunity to explore other options and find another great school! Congratulations to all accepted, and to all deferred/rejected I feel your pain. <3 **

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: legacy, moving halfway through high school, rank, GPA, recs, strength of schedule, applied early
[] Weaknesses: ACT, AP Scores (though they do not matter very much for admissions)
[] Why you think you were accepted: I showed that I really loved Duke! I also have seen many parts of the world and am experienced. I showed that I take an interest in my community through clubs. I play a sport that I am very dedicated to.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] Only applied to Duke!
General Comments: Honestly, I believed I had a great chance at getting into Duke. I decided to apply ED since January and I have been waiting for this day ever since. I poured over others’ applications and decisions and the qualities that Duke looks for. I also compared myself to my brother and how he got in two years ago! I know many people say, “You got in! You didn’t have anything to worry about!” That’s not true. Top schools like Duke have specific and special qualities that they are looking for. No one is an absolute shoe-in for this school and just because you have high test scores, grades, etc. does not mean you will get in. Conversely, just because your test scores aren’t stellar doesn’t mean you will get rejected or deferred! I stressed over this decision for weeks and months on end (even had mental breakdowns the days leading up to the 11th), but that’s okay. Freaking out about a college decision is not desirable; however, it is justified. It is an important step in life and you have to realize that! If you do not get in, freak out and cry, but also pull yourself together and apply to other top schools and be confident in your applications. It would be tough, but so worth it in the end. I am beyond excited to be at Duke next fall! The campus is absolutely breathtaking, which was one of my reasons for picking it (and the academics of course!). Good luck to future applicants and congrats to everyone that got in!

Essays:
Common App:
-Received wonderful feedback. Chose the “failure” topic…readers value applicants that can discuss something other than their achievements.
Why Engineering at Duke?
-Very clean, strong essay. Tied my interests into the Home Depot Smart Home and the opportunities through DukeEngage. Highlighted my career-based pursuits and aspirations.
Diversity:
-Discussed my role in leading a very diverse group of students, combining their talents, beliefs, and personalities, in order to produce a Nationally Award-Winning renovation design for a historic home in Washington, D.C. My advice: No essay is entirely “optional” for a top-tier school. Be creative and address each prompt in your own way!

Teacher Recommendation: 10/10. Submitted 3, did not read. Selected my three closest teachers in Physics, Calculus (Teacher now works for the College Board), and Psychology.
Counselor Rec: 10/10. Did not read; however, I am very close with my counselor.
Additional Rec: 10/10. Submitted a letter from my Engineering Instructor (TSA Advisor) and from a member of the Real Estate Team I am interning with. I have know each individual for many years, and they had only great things to say!

Interview: Strangely, not offered one. I guess interviews truly are not a major determining factor. However, I recommend you submit your application early in order to receive one. If you do not receive an interview, I HIGHLY recommend submitting an additional recommendation letter in its place.

Reflection:

I am more than thrilled to have been accepted…now I am in dire need of scholarships!! I am very confident in my decision to choose Duke! I realized that being a well-rounded applicant is very advantageous in the admissions process. Do not put all of your eggs in the Academic basket! Volunteer, work, and join clubs and sports! My participation outside of the classroom is what has made my high school experience fulfilling and fun! I would be glad to help out any prospective applications for RD or the following years with their applications.

Strengths: Test Scores, GPA, EC Activities, Essays
Weaknesses: No interview!

General Comments: See reflection! Go Blue Devils!! Can’t wait to meet all other admits next Fall! For those of you who were deferred/denied, do not lose hope! You have many more opportunities up ahead!

Subjective
• Extracurriculars:
o Designed and built a system that takes voice commands and communicates with the Verizon FIOS cable box over a WiFi network to display selected channels and programs on TV. Designed and built this as electronics hobby/project. This was built over a period of 5 months after extensive online research and coding in C/C++. The final product enabled users to talk into an iPhone to search for shows or change channels.
o Designed and built remote-control motorized mechanism to automatically raise and lower two large normal windows blinds in my room. I conceived the project as convenience mechanism but learned a lot about infrared remotes, Arduino boards, electrical motors, and electrical switches and wiring while customizing regular window blinds into motorized blinds
o Built a fully automated the electrical lighting system in my room that has 10 individual lights on 3 separate lighting systems. Designed and built an Arduino board and connected it to wall mounted electrical switches. Built this as electronics hobby/project
• Job/Work Experience: NA

Essays (rating 1-10, details): Overall Rate: 7
•My first essay was very personal and talked about how my mother is depressed and in Africa. My father is now the only one to take care of my brother and I so it’s hard with his low salary (<$30,000). It discussed the loss of my two oldest siblings when I was younger in Africa as well as the loss of my littlest brother here in America. Rate: 8
•The Why Duke essay was weaker, I chose to write on diversity and how I’ve been impacted and then proceeded to talk about the amazing undergraduate science program at Duke. Rate: 6

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): Overall Rate: 9
•Teacher Rec #1: My favorite anatomy and physiology teacher wrote this, he was also my science fair mentor when I was in the 9th and 10th grade as well as the Science Olympiad coordinator. We have a very close relationship. Rate: 9
•Teacher Rec #2: My IB HOA Teacher during junior year, we had a good relationship and was always one of his most appreciated students. Rate: 8
•Counselor Rec: My International Baccalaureate Program Coordinator tailored mine to fit me on a more personal level, since she deals with less students then the regular counselors. Rate: 8

Interview: Rate: 9
•This went really well to me, I thought that I did a good job of showing my personality without talking about school related activities. Although I know the length doesn’t mean a lot, we spent 2 hours together just laughing about similarities between high school and college and then she reminisced while I told her what I was most excited about. She was fairly young (just graduated like 2 years ago) and we hit it off pretty well. Ewe even had a follow up phone call two days later.

** Other **
•State (if domestic applicant): Texas
•School Type: Public school (HUGE… like 6A)
•Ethnicity: African (black)
•Gender: Female
•Income Bracket: 25,000 to 29,000
•Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): black female very interested in the STEM field, First Generation in College, First Generation in America, URM

** Reflection **
•Strengths: My ECs are very specific to what I enjoy and I have stayed very commited throughout the years. I did a good job of displaying me as a person in everything I wrote. Also due to the IB CAS requirement my volunteer hours are very developed and are activities I truly enjoy. My summers are also spent productively

•Weaknesses: My test scores are on the low end, I wish I had started testing sooner so I could have had more developed scores to submit to Duke ED. My grades and GPA were also not the highest despite my class rank percentage.

•Why you think you were rejected: My test scores are extremely low in comparison to a a lot of people and my writing comes across as cheesy and cliche to certain people (probably because I read/watch a lot of dramas). I also realize that my GPA is fairly low and definitely hurt me. I also lack AP credit and my one IB score thus far, is mediocre.

•Colleges I’ve been accepted to: Baylor University, University of Texas, Fordham University and Tulane University

•Colleges I’m applying still to: Emory University, Vanderbilt University and the University of Southern California

•General Comments: I’m going to be honest, I know that I have more weaknesses than strengths academically (especially compared to all the other posts I’ve read) but I really thought I had a good chance, especially since I am an under represented black female with a passion for science. But it just goes to show, anything can happen. I really wish I had at least gotten deferred, but hey, they call it a reach school for a reason. Congrats to everyone who was accepted, and to those who weren’t… like me… it’s alright! We’ll be fine and who knows maybe we’ll go to college, better ourselves, then transfer to Duke later! I know I’m going to try. It does definitely sting, but what doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger! (Sorry to be so cliché and touchy I just really wanted to say those things). Okay Bye.

Strengths: Essays- I really put a lot of effort into polishing my essays and did every possible essay supplement for Duke; Scores (?),
Weaknesses: Extracurriculars were not specifically engineering oriented; no real hooks.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere
General Comments: These threads were always so helpful to me so I thought I’d post my own:)

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: ACT, School, Essays, Legacy, Robotics
[] Weaknesses: Grades, SAT, APs
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I attempted to present myself in a concise way that showed only the parts most significant to me. My enthusiasm for Duke certainly helped a lot, as did my communication with local alumni and admissions officers. Legacy undoubtedly aided as well.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Nowhere[/ul]
General Comments: I can’t wait to be a Blue Devil! This has been my dream for my whole life and I can’t believe it’s actually happening! To everybody who got accepted, I can’t wait to see you in the fall. If you got deferred, don’t worry you still have time to make Duke need you! To those who were rejected, it’s not the end of the world. It’s Duke’s loss and I’m sure there are plenty of colleges out there who want you. This year, I’ve known so many extremely well-qualified applicants who didn’t get into the college of their dreams, but they haven’t lost hope, and that’s the most important thing. If you’re reading this and have yet to apply, don’t worry about the high stats that you see throughout College Confidential. Just do the things you love and if Duke sees your enthusiasm, you have a great chance of being accepted!
Let’s go Duke, Let’s go Duke!

[] Job/Work Experience: part-time at a local restaurant
[] Volunteer/Community service: summer camp counselor, art camp teacher, taught music to kids
[] Essays: I thought my voice really shined through them, they did not have a similar theme i.e. that i was packaging myself around an extracurricular. my why duke was really great, 10/10, common app probably 8-9/10, optional essay 9/10
[] Teacher Recommendations: i read one of the two, it was very solid!
[] Counselor Rec: don’t know, it was probably good, idk about great, but she likes the restaurant I work at, lol
[] Additional Rec: my music teacher, really learned about my character
[] Interview:
not so great, i didn’t prepare beforehand, got an interviewer who went to duke >30 years ago, hard to talk about the current academic offerings… seemed to stick to textbook interview questions

[ b]Reflection**
[ list]
[] Strengths: My essays especially. I spoke about my traveling experiences in my optional essay, I was going for a well-rounded persona
[] Weaknesses: grades especially :frowning: and my test scores are on the lower end.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: probably because they didn’t see the extent of my extracurriculars through the common app’s short character count, my senior year quarter grades were pretty terrible (because my school is semester based, i tend to slack off a little on quarters because I can make up by semester) my interview was pretty bland.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
no where yet  haven’t applied anywhere EA
[ b]General Comments:** Congrats to everyone, I know if I was accepted I would be sooooo relieved/happy. I’m not too bummed, I was preparing myself for this for the past week. I’m going to review my application and send the best one to my second-choices, Rice and Northwestern. I’m surprised I haven’t cried yet (knocks on wood)

[] Senior Year Course Load: full IB
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):[/ul] no real major awards, but a lot of academic awards (high ranks in subjects/overall grades), currently on a full scholarship?, academic competition awards, interesting non-academic awards - shows i have a wide variety of interests haha
Subjective:

[ul]
[] Extracurriculars: founded a club, organised service trips, some other small stuff (small leadership roles as well)
[] Job/Work Experience: paid social service worker, tutor
[] Volunteer/Community service: 2 other volunteer ec’s
[] Essays: common app essay was fun, my friends I loved it 9/10; why duke about a volunteer experience and how i want to set up a program for engage (maybe generic, not sure 6/10); other supplement was about my transition to another country and how i adapted to it (i found it a little dull, but several people said it was my best essay so 8/10?)
[] Teacher Recommendations: 2 teachers who knew me pretty well and knew my passion and aptitude for the subjects so probably 8/10 for both
[] Counselor Rec: she knows what I did in school, but most of the cool things I did were outside of school…so there’s mainly a lot of emphasis on my intelligence I guess - but I didn’t read it 7/10
[] Additional Rec: none
[] Interview:[/ul] ok 1.5h - but i didn’t feel very good about it. the interviewer seemed mildly impressed with me, and i asked a loooot of questions about duke (was definitely interested!). but i ended up being much more impressed by her achievements! 6/10

[] Strengths: sat, grades, community service (i’m passionate about it)

[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: i guess the less significant ec’s diluted my application -i didn’t sell myself well enough,
maybe i seemed like a typical asian nerd?
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] haven’t applied elsewhere.
General Comments: at first, i was shocked! i truly believed i had a chance. then, i was really bitter. i thought, why did they prolong my misery?? since deferral is most probably going to result in a rejection. but then, now i’m thankful that i’m deferred. it gives me hope for future applications. and there’s still a chance i’d get in, however slim that may be!
i’m going to remove those “unimportant” ec’s; and do more essays. fingers crossed!

congrats to everyone who got in!! and for fellow rejects/deferred applicants - we have over 2 weeks left! let’s make the best of it  i’m sure we’ll end up somewhere where we’d be happy eventually. good luck to all!

Reflection

[ul]
[] Strengths: Eagle Scout, ACT score, extracurriculars
[] Weaknesses: Did not list APs (a four and two threes), GPA isnt outstanding for Duke, Counselor rec
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: You can never know for sure, but the application pool was probably just too strong. I may have come off as too well-rounded without a specific enough niche for Duke. I am confident that I will end up somewhere great and that it will all work out in the end.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/ul] Nowhere yet, applied EA to Michigan, Virginia, Maryland, and Umass. I hear back from Michigan in 1 week.

General Comments: I felt that it was really important for me to post this. Many people freak out on these forums and then do not post their decisions making them cluttered with acceptances and a few deferrals, leading to an unrepresentative collection of decisions. I have no regrets about my application and would not have done anything differently. I hope this will show future applicants that the process is insanely unpredictable and will NEVER be fair. The sooner you can accept this fact, the better you will be prepared for whatever result you have in your decision. I have absolutely no feelings of animosity towards Duke for their decision. To everyone accepted: congrats, you all definitely earned it and I hope you have an outstanding 4 years at Duke!

Probably helped tip over my application.

State (if domestic applicant):N/A
Country (if international applicant): Switzerland
School Type: International School
Ethnicity: American, White
Gender: M
Income Bracket: Medium-High income

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): American living abroad hist whole life, lots of experience and interesting events coming from that, Grandparent didn’t attend Duke due to military service (??? dunno if thats considered), really good story for why Duke and college essay, quite unique i think.
Strengths: International work experience with independently organized NGO’s, a lot of speech related/debate/english awards, interesting story and great recommendations, absolutely great interview, lots of all around activities and commitment, fluent in French and English and pretty good at Spanish.
Weaknesses: Not “Best” SAT or GPA (still average for Duke i think), no one extracurricular that stands out as a mastery of something I love (i guess…)
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected:I worked a lot lot on my essays and feel they were very strong and unique, and backed by a wonderful interview may have sealed the deal. Good steady grades and proof of challenge through activities such as travelling alone to work and world issues involvement is pretty impressive I hope, and a clear idea that Duke is my number one school. Also living internationally for most of my life in various countries and continents and taking advantage of the various opportunities.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Tulane accepted early, cant hear from others

Weaknesses: The fact that I didn’t try my freshman and sophomore years and didn’t know the importance of taking hard classes before it was too late.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I honestly don’t know why I was rejected, probably class rank and course rigor. Also probably the fact that nobody in the last 5 years has went to any elite colleges from my school.

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected:
Honestly, I feel like my GPA probably wasn’t high enough to get in and being asian certainly didn’t help much. I was hoping for at least a deferral, but I guess not  oh well on to the RD colleges
General Comments: Honestly getting in to Duke has been my dream for quite some time and getting rejected really hurt, but I’m just trying to be optimistic for the rest of the process. I doubt any school will fit me as well as Duke though; I’m just sad that my grades weren’t high enough and the admissions committee didn’t really see what I could’ve contributed to the campus

Strengths: Excellent grades, ACT, SATIIs, academic and service awards, great community service program, strong leadership roles, great recommendations.
Weaknesses: No musical instrument. No hooks.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Duke was my #1 choice and I think that came through in the Why Duke essay. Plus I had a strong application in terms of checking most of the boxes.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted EA – Tulane Honors program with Presidential Scholarship. All other applications had to be withdrawn (luckily!).
General Comments: I still cannot believe this is happening. I am so unbelievably excited and cannot wait to be a Blue Devil and meet all my new #Duke2019 classmates! For future applicants: ECs are important but leadership and passion are more important. Find something you can do to demonstrate your leadership and passion.

**General Comments:I really hope I get in, I’ve wanted to go to Duke for a long time. Congrats to all those accepted and good luck to those who also got deferred. To those who got rejected, you’ll do awesome wherever you end up and the fact that you applied shows that you most likely have a bright future ahead of you. I can’t believe the process still isn’t over, but at the same time it’s something to look forward to. Feel free to private message me for any additional info, or just to talk. **
