Official Harvard EA Decisions - Class of 2010

Yes, just getting to ISEF isn't very good. But, if you win 1st or higher I think it's a big plus.

Well duh :p

EDIT: Especially if you win higher than 1st. I mean, that's just impressive ;)

lol guitarman, tupac meant Best of Category, since some categories have like 10 first place winners, while there is only one Best of Category.

haha oooh, ok. Well, my "Well duh :p" comment still stands, because that's a pretty sound accomplishment!

well ISEF 1st < Siemens Regional, and Regional Finalist isn't really that big of an accomplishment. ISEF 1st sounds good though lol

Man, regional finalist is a HUGE accomplishment, especially for the individuals ;)

lol true idk what i was thinking. Teams is easier though.

why is USABO ranked lower than the other olympiads?

oops, never mind, haha

What is the equivalent of the Intel competitions or olympiads in other academic fields such as English? Is there a "Junior Pulitzer" one can win?

Not really. That's why I have no clue how Harvard does humanities admissions. You can write to essay contests and stuff. I imagine getting published in the New Yorker is the rough equivalent as qualifying for an Olympiad, or maybe even doing really well at an Olympiad.

Being published in the New Yorker is far and away more difficult than qualifying for an Olympiad, simply by virtue of the fact that Olympiads are designed for highschoolers, while the New Yorker is an adult magazine with pieces almost entirely written by adults. :D

Yes, I would agree completely, but we're talking about the kinds of things that a kid who is passionate in math and science might achieve. If you're published in the New Yorker, then don't apply to Harvard and expect them to think you might win the Nobel Prize.

Yeah, Harvard basically needs to be assured that you are a sound investment. English majors do not go far ;) just kidding.

Being a math/science person myself, I especially admire people who can write well. It's soooooooo hard for me to write a good essay!

People always be telling me that I write good.
edit: and with that, I think I've successfully killed the thread. ;)

Well, any good scientist has to be able to write well and if they can't, they develop the skill pretty fast--publishing papers is half of our job!

adam have you published???

i found that writing college essays are MUCH harder than writing scientific papers or essays for school.

Not yet. My first project took me until May or so, and we wanted the second project to be the one we submit to Intel/Siemens so my time thus far has been all research. Competition deadlines have hampered my ability to write papers, so after the conference in January, I should get started on the first paper again. I plan to have both projects published (first author on one or both) by the end of next year.

You?

And wrath, if you've ever written a scientific paper you'll know that it's about 1000 times harder than a college essay and can NOT be equated to some essay for school :p
