Official Harvard SCEA Class of 2018 applicants thread

Take both. Kids in my class did that last year easily.

thanks! and bmonticello, i would take both but they’re offered at the same time! that’s my main issue. at least i took 2 AP sciences last year with 5s on both so i hope it’ll be okay

Nice diddly123!

I took AP Physics, AP Chem, and AP Bio alongside 3 other AP’s my junior year, so I believe it’s entirely possible. But diddly123 was saying that his school wouldn’t LET him take the classes together, so in that situation, I would say to go with AP Bio. I really enjoyed that class, and felt that it related to real life much more than AP Physics (when in the world do you have to calculate the time it takes for a ball to land on the floor, with the only force being gravity with no air resistance?) .

thanks bmonticello! but yeah the problem is that my school is so small (~25 kids per grade with honestly only about 4 that really care about school at all) and they don’t have the funding for AP physics. ugh whatever i’ll probably just do physics though because i went on so many college’s websites and they all said they recommend bio/chem/physics so that’s probably the best route. but i appreciate the insight terminatorp :slight_smile: . plus i think they’ll understand that i really didn’t want to graduate without physics, so hopefully sacrificing the rigor of that one course won’t do much damage!

i also have AP calc, AP lit, AP gov, and AP Studio art so hoping for the best!!

by the way, anyone taking the october SAT?

my own rant, just for myself cause i have nothing better to do and i want to vent lmao: it’s my last shot and i REALLY REALLY want a 2300+. and that would be most possible if i increased math cause i ALWAYS make careless mistakes and i’ve been working on practicing under really high stress situations. and CR, vocab is easy but i HATE passage based reading. but it’s only a 50 point increase from my current 2230 so i’m praying it wont be much of an issue :X

I’m done with the SAT for good, but I’ll be taking Math II and US History on the October date. Any tips on those two subject tests? Anyone?

Math II isn’t bad, I used the Barrons book, a 700 in that book is equivalent to an 800 on the real thing. Pace yourself well, you need time for the last few questions because there can be some killers. I did bad on US, something 90 questions in an hour is hard. Anyway, I didn’t prep for it besides what I was doing fro the AP, so not many tips. I find the best way to do good on subject tests is to take many practice tests. I’m done with SATs, I got a 34 ACT in June so I decided to abandon my 2100 SAT. I’m studying this time so maybe I can get the coveted 36.

@Neutrality

Thanks! I’ve heard good things about Barrons. I’m currently reading AMSCO for US History, but any other input from anyone else would be awesome. I got a 34 in June too, and I’m aiming for a 36 as well.

I’m not a Harvard 2018er, (I’m hopeful for Stanford 2020) but I wanted to ask you guys something. Would you be willing to post your results on the desicions thread? Just so future applicants can see

Of course. And also, guys, for the ACT I’m taking it first and only time in September and I have barrons 36 and the red book. Are these two books good enough?

@bmonticello

For sure. All you really need is the red book. My ACT “prep” was one practice test the weekend before my test date.

ACT is the best standardized test in my opinion, and you really perhaps don’t need to stress preparing too much for it.

I never took the ACT until my school offered it for free in May. Up till then, I always disregarded it, thinking it was some “other” test. I barely cracked a 2100 at that time on my SAT, and was pretty much stuck there, despite spending some time in preparation. I took the ACT at my school, and got a 33, getting 36’s in Math and Reading respectively, with the major sucker being science, a 28, since I ran out of time (I had absolutely no idea how the questions would have looked like).

This gave me some perspective. The ACT is definitely a skills test, and in my opinion, that’s what should be the way things are! When I got my results, I immediately wanted to take the ACT again. I registered late for the June exam, and I had only 1 week to prepare. So I focused on Science only, and I borrowed a red book from a friend, and took 2 practice science only tests. June comes, and I got a 36 in science, but somehow a 34 in reading and 34 in math, cumulative score ends up at a 34, superscore being a 36. I know colleges don’t superscore, but I will send both scores and let them judge.

But indeed, in the ACT’s situation, simply taking some practice tests, and just familiarizing yourself with the questions will take you a MUCH longer way than doing the same thing for the SAT.

Unsurprisingly, this year, the number of ACT test takers this year exceeded that of the SAT for the first time ever.

I agree with Terminatorp, and I am in a similar situation, but I took it for my first time in June. I got a 2100 exactly on my SAT after practice tests and memorizing vocab, brought up from a 1960. I took the ACT and got a 34, I don’t know what it was, the test didn’t seem particularly easier than the SAT, but I ended up with a better score. I sort of like how the ACT is structured such that you use every second, I end up pausing and rethinking a lot on the SAT, I think it’s more of a continuous flow thing on the ACT.

i actually like the SAT more! (unpopular opinion). I used to love the ACT/hate the SAT but as I took the tests and practiced more, I just felt that the SAT was just so much more user-friendly (time limits are great, not an issue at all) and, unlike the ACT, you don’t really need to know anything. it’s more of a common-sense test and i just find that less stressful for some reason!

i studied for months for the ACT and only pulled off a 33 in the end but just reviewed a little for the SAT and have a 2230 (retaking but still lmao). i would retake the ACT but i already took it 3 times and i’m applying to some schools that want to see all scores :X BUT MY MATH SCORE ON THE JUNE ACT DROPPED CAUSE I HAD TO PEE SO ******* BAD AND COULDN’T GO SO I COULDNT FOCUS UGH and that wrecked my composite!

when do you guys think the supplemental essays will come out? i’m trying to get as many done as possible before school starts hahaha

Same. And I hope the same goes for me with the ACT. 2190 SAT in march. Retook in june and dropped 50 pts. Eek. Looking for a 34+

Don’t stress over it too much bmonticello23! 2190 is respectable, and you are amazing in lots of things! I visited Harvard and took an admissions tour this summer, and the admissions officer at the orientation said that if a student took the SAT more than 6 times, he would allow it to be counted as an extracurricular… LOL. So don’t overdo it, you are fine!!

Haha! Oh god. And thanks. I can’t afford Harvard anyway, so it doesnt matter, but I’m still applying just to see.

which essays are you guys choosing? they’re out!
