Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 680 (CR), 650 (W), 630 (M)
[] ACT: 30
[] SAT II: 750 (U.S. History), 640 (Spanish w/o Listening)

[] Teacher Recommendation: Both wonderful!
[] Counselor Rec: ehh who knows?
[] Additional Rec: none
[] Interview: she absolutely loved me and was 100% supportive of me getting accepted.
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant): GA

[] School Type: Public, rural
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: 80-100k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Both my parents never had a degree more advanced than a technical license.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: I was totally honest. I wasn’t afraid to admit my weaknesses, but instead let them focus my strengths. I’m from rural south Georgia. No one from my school has ever been accepted to an Ivy League.
[] Weaknesses: Scores obviously
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I think they saw that I was involved in a diverse set of activities, yet they could clearly see that I loved social sciences and arts.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Harvard was my only ivy league that I applied to[/li][/ul]General Comments: Let’s be honest, with my standardized scores, I was totally shocked to find out that I was accepted. But for everyone reading this, realize that the majority of the people posting their stats on c.c. are excessive overachievers. Of course they all had 2340’s on their SAT, but you probably aren’t going to see the other people who got in the 1900’s or 2000’s on c.c. So apply! Don’t be scared. If I got in, so can you!

Decision: Accepted

[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): NOTHING
[/li]

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Solid overall
[] Weaknesses: Nothing very extraordinary about me whatsoever
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: NO IDEA. I think that I was a qualified applicant, but so are most of the people who apply; I cannot even begin to fathom what it was that stood out in my application enough to get me accepted.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: U of Chicago, UPenn (Wharton), Dartmouth, Northwestern (Medill), WashU, Michigan, Minnesota
Waitlisted: Stanford and Brown

[/ul]General Comments:
College admissions are crazy wonky. Of all the schools I applied to, Harvard was the last one I ever expected to get into. I am shocked and just so incredibly grateful to have been accepted. Best of luck to everyone in this whole crazy, brutally random process!!

OH MY GOD I WAS

[li] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.):National Merit Scholar. (I also listed school awards, such as senior of distinction and Most Likely to be Rich like Oprah. ;-P)[/li][/ul]

Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

[] Job/Work Experience: Brand Rep/Sales Rep at Justice Tween Clothing
[] Volunteer/Community service: 200+ hours of teaching youth theatre camps
[] Summer Activities: See above, plus summer school, shows, and a trip to Europe last summer.
[] Essays: Unique in that neither focused on any great life struggle or EC like most suggest. My commonapp was about how my messy room reflects my creative mind and my supplement was about how I enjoy spontaneous roadtripping with my best friend. I was confident with both pieces, but they were certainly more Chicago than Harvard. (In fact, my roadtrip essay was an adapted version of my Chicago “Find X”)
[] Teacher Recommendation: One generic, one absolutely fantastic, best I’ve ever read.
[] Counselor Rec: I didn’t read. Probably fairly generic but talked about my tough curriculum and unique choice to pursue classes at a local university.
[] Additional Rec:None
[li] Interview:First- on campus interview, turned out to be with Mr. Dwight Miller (the man who’s worked in admissions longer that any other officer- 42 years) and was incredible. We talked a lot about Helen Keller as that was a common interest, and I’ve played her in a show. He ended up walking me to a Helen Keller monument on campus that most people don’t know about and pointing me towards a few museums (Longfellow house) based on some things I had said I was interested in. He’s a great guy, and we really clicked. [/li]Alumni interview- It was very short- he was heading out of town. The man was nice and informative, but I wasn’t sure if he took me seriously (if only because no one gets in from my town…) He did tell me about a concentration program I had not heard of and now plan to pursue, and he sent me a nice email when I was accepted. =)
[/ul]

Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):LA
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Medium/Large public. Not really competitive. No one sent to ivies ever as far as the staff can find/remember.
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: 30,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Geographic diversity? Low income?[/li][/ul]

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Essay, GPA, ECs, On Campus interview
[] Weaknesses: Major lack of APs (only three offered), SAT subjects, low math scores across the board, didn’t take AP English, quit band and started a lot of ECs senior year, a fairly generic rec, essays didn’t necessarily talk about ECs I’m passionate about or anything conventional, also it’s Harvard…
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I think my on campus interview had a lot to do with it. I also had a chance to speak with my regional admissions officer after I got a likely, and for whatever reason, I could tell she really liked me and fought hard for me. She was also into theatre and mock trial in high school, which are my two main ECs, so that could not have hurt. =P Other than that, luck, serendipity, the grace of God, whatever you want to call it.
[] Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected:
Accepted: Harvard, Vandy, UofChicago, UNC- Chapel Hill, Carleton, Drexel(Honors), LSU(Honors)
Waitlist/Deferred: WashU, Yale, and Tulane (Which was actually my safety… yikes!)
Rejected: Brown (deferred ED)
[/ul]

General Comments:
Looks like I’ll be getting great aid. If that comes through, I’m about 98% sure I’ll be attending. I have enjoyed this whole process and don’t regret a thing from my high school career or application process. Things have worked out in the best possible way. To those accepted, congratulations. I hope we will meet one another in the Harvard class of 2015! To those waitlisted, I hope to see you in the fall as well. Don’t lose faith, and do write a heartfelt letter. Things will work out how they are best meant to in the end. To those rejected, I am deeply sorry. I’m sure many of you are among those that have entertained me all year on this board, and I can’t say how much I hate that I won’t be meeting you in the fall. Take solace in the fact that you gave your best effort. I’m sure you will all end up in an incredible school in the fall. =)
Thank you all for all of your help in this process. I would not have done it without the advice I received on this board.
And that being said…
HARVARD CLASS OF 2015. HECK YES.

I’m not even sure why I was accepted. One of my teacher’s suggested that I applied, but I was sure I had no chance. I wasn’t even nervous when I got the email, because I was sure I had been rejected, and really excited about going to Berkeley. I guess they saw how passionate I was about Soccer and Medicine. I can’t believe I’m going to Harvard! You don’t need amazing test scores to get in! And to the ones that didn’t get in, you’re still awesome! I’ve met amazing people here, and I’m sure that wherever they go, they’ll be incredibly happy and successful.

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): National Honor Society (president), Math Team (vice-president), Academic Bowl (captain), Orchestra playing the viola and including a jazz ensemble and the musical orchestra
[] Job/Work Experience: none…
[] Volunteer/Community service: I do a lot of community work through NHS b/c that’s it’s purpose. I’m also on the social action committee and rummage sale committee at my church.
[] Summer Activities: Different each summer. Before soph: driver’s education ;). Before junior: two music camps. Before senior: three-week camp at Northwestern’s CTD and multiple vacations.
[] Essays: I do regret some of my essays in retrospect. My common app essay was about the character Amory Blaine from F. Scott Fitzgerald’s This Side of Paradise…ever so slightly obscure, but in him I saw a lot of myself. The essay focused on the role egotism has played in my life and a little bit about my struggle to eliminate it within myself; on writing it I thought it was brimming with candor and loved it, but when I reread it months later it seemed a little pretentious…exactly what I was trying to avoid. I wrote about my love for reality television for the extra essay. I thought it was a good topic because it defines a big part of me, but rereading it, it looks a little cheesy (I really tried to defend and glorify the genre) and perhaps irrelevant to the admissions officer.
[] Teacher Recommendation: I never read them, but I chose two teachers that LOVED me. One of them is a math teacher that is very popular and has written many and so I hope that means it was good, but that could also mean it was generic. The other was an english teacher that very few kids like but I adored and she had never written one before, so I’m not sure how it was, though I do know that she worked very hard because she supports me.
[] Counselor Rec: Never saw it. My counselor was also my freshman english teacher, so she knows me really well though and I think it should have been great.
[] Additional Rec: None!
[] Interview: Slightly awkward. I wasn’t nervous at all until my interviewer walked in, then got really nervous. I tried really really really hard to engage with him but I think it worked against me. Got caught off guard with a “Why are you more special than everyone else applying” sort of question. Only lasted about 35 minutes; decent at best; probably didn’t help much.

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I mean the only hooks I have are the standards like transcript, test scores, activities, etc. So none, really.
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Very strong transcript, test scores, and I think recs.
[] Weaknesses: Probably could’ve done more community service, no sports (save for private tennis lessons), my writing subscores were only OK even though I’m a pretty good writer, and…white male.
[] Why you think you were rejected: I think I just don’t have that X-Factor. Lots of involvement and leadership and excellent grades/tests but just nothing that’s truly unique; on paper I’m rather immemorable.
[li] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:[/li]Accepted: Cornell U., WUSTL, U Mich, U Illinois, Indiana U
Waitlisted: Brown
Rejected: Yale, Stanford, Penn, and Duke (whose admit I took for granted…)
[/ul]General Comments:
Going into admissions I really thought I was a catch: prefect transcript in the most difficult path at my school, great test scores (at least the ACT), lots of activities and leadership. I’m hugely saddened by my showing, but I know that I’ll get over it and live a happy life.
