Just wanted to start a UT football and basketball thread. Post anything football or basketball related.

Here are my thoughts on the upcoming season (09-10):

Football: I hope we become national champs this year but it's not gonna happen. Being a UT fan, I don't think we have the talent to win it all. We don't have enough playmakers. Are only star is Colt McCoy and even though we had a good recruiting class, freshman aren't gonna do much this year. I hate to say it but I also think that we are gonna get blown out by OU next season, they clearly have superior talent. I think UT will have its best shot at the national title in 1-2 years after this coming season. Connor Wood is gonna be a superstar QB, better than Vince and Colt, and our great recruits will have more experience.

Basketball: Our basketball is gonna be a lot better this year because we had amazing recruits. Hopefully we'll be a top 10 basketball program after getting the number 1 player in the country, Avery Bradley. With that said, there is still no way we are gonna be champs in basketball either.

Who will win this years Heisman? Who will be national champs or will UNC and UF repeat?

Connor Wood? What about Garret Gilbert? He is the 3rd best quarterback coming out of high school this year and he has a better rivals ranking…

You must be the worst fan ever. We will beat OU.

My post on another thread:
OU only has one returning offensive lineman. Bradford will not get as much time to throw and will get sacked. UT has a very good chance of being the Big 12 champs b/c TT & Missouri are in rebuilding mode. I believe UT has the talent to beat OU again this upcoming year.
Connor Wood? Garrett Gilbert is much better and will be the next superstar QB for Texas after McCoy is gone. He has good size (6’4"), speed (4.7 40), arm, and accuracy.

John Wall is the number one player in the country lol. But if Damion James comes back for his senior year, Avery Bradley & Jordan Hamilton will probably get the longhorns to the Elite Eight.

Hahah yeah I meant Garrett Gilbert, got him confused with Connor Wood, my bad. Gilbert was this years recruit and Wood is a projected recruit for next year. Gilbert was the second best QB in the country, next to the guy from USC (even though his numbers are much better). I expect Gilbert to be at UT for 3 year (only play 2 years because he’s playing behind McCoy) before going pro, Wood will start after him. Wood doesn’t have the arm compared to Gilbert but he is really versatile and is comparable to Colt McCoy.

I agree that UT has a great chance of being Big 12 champs, I meant that I don’t think they can be national champs. Sadly, OU does have better talent because I heard that 4 players are projected to be in the top 7 picks for the 2010 NFL Draft! I agree that OU lost good offensive players but they still have Bradford, Gresham, and Murray.

Hmm, according to rivals.com John Wall is the #1 player in the country. 1 month ago Avery Bradley (SG) was. He won the high school slam dunk contest and was #1 player overall for a while. Despite having Bradley, James, and other young players, UT won’t have enough experience to win the national title. At best UTs basketball will be a top 5-8 team.

I’m just saying what I think will happen. I hope I’m wrong though. I’m talking about the 09-10 season btw. If Bradley and Hamilton return for another season, UT will be a strong contender.

Dude, you have it all wrong. Texas is gonna beat OU. OU had a great offense because they had the best OL that people had ever seen. And from what I’ve been reading about their Spring game, the OL is going to be the biggest weakness. Furthermore, Bradford wont have his 2 top receivers coming back. Remember Colt McCoy’s downyear as a sophomore? With an inexperienced OL, and his top receiver(Limas Sweed) out due to injury, Texas didn’t get much going offensively and Colt was basically running for his life. I expect the same for Bradford. Just remember, the battle in football is all about the trenches. You’re going to need more than a great QB and a TE to win. With 4/5 OL players coming back for Texas, this should give Colt more time and confidence to throw the ball to an up and coming receiving corps of Shipley, Brandon Collins, James Kirkendoll, and Malcolm Kelly. We just need a TE to step up to help stretch the field. It’s not looking good for Blaine Irby from what I’ve been reading. Even more, this should improve the running game and I think Fozzy is going to step up with this. If not him then maybe Cody Johnson or Chris Whaley. And playmaker? You’re forgetting the 2008 class where we had DeSean Hales. Watch his vid, you’ll be amazed. He is damn fast.

On the defensive side, OU does have 9 players on that side coming back. Question is, can their defensive coordinator do anything with it. It’s also a matter of whether their back 7 can improve. For Texas, we have Kindle going on to DE(the next Orakpo). Some people have questioned our DL, but if you watched Texas football this past season, we were doing a heavy DL rotation. In other words, our DL will be fine. I’d rather have a less experienced DL than an inexperienced OL. OL need a lot of time to gel. Even more, our secondary will be much more improved in the pass happy Big 12. Our LBs should be great with Muck and Norton. And the biggest piece to our defense is Coach Will Muschamp(aka Coach Boom). More time with this guy and our defense is going to be the best in the Big 12 again. Him around improved our defense this past season and led to us having the best defense in the Big 12. This guy is a great motivator, has a lot of energy, and there’s a reason he’ll be the successor to Mack Brown.

Texas will definitely have a great future. Just look at the 2009 recruiting class. Better yet, check out the 2010 class on Rivals.com. If any HS prospect in Big 12 country right now, I’d prolly want to leave it and go to Michigan or Ohio State. Looking at this 2010 class, our defense is going to be SCARY GOOD.

As for basketball, with the verbals of Hamilton and Bradley and the possibility of James coming back, this will definitely give us more offense that we lacked this past season. We should be much better.

JHB619

What have you heard about Blaine Irby? I haven’t seen anything lately about him.

Well, last I’ve heard is he’s still hurt and wasn’t in the spring game. From what people have been saying, they’re hoping for summer that he will get better. We may have to go with a few backup TEs. But this is a few weeks ago so things might have changed. Lets hope for speedy recovery.

I’m not saying that UT won’t be a threat and a national champion contender, I just think that we won’t elevate to the next level THIS YEAR. I would compare UT to the Dallas Mavericks (of the past 8 years), a dangerous team and a playoff contender who just can’t get it done. Even if we do make it to national title game, I just don’t see a Big 12 team beating the speed of the SEC, or the pro style of the Pac-10s USC. I also can’t see us beating an ACC team in basketball or Kansas in the Big 12.

I’m starting to have a little bit more confidence in UT beating OU though. I didn’t realize that OU lost from the O-line, who left? That’s a big loss considering that Bradford had all day to throw, probably the second best line last year next to TX Tech. Iglesias, their best receiver, is also gone. Last year UTs secondary was really young, so we should improve there. I still don’t feel we have enough impactful receivers, they are solid players with depth but not star players, which I feel makes a huge difference. I also feel that we are weak at the running back position. My initial thought was that Bradford, a solid defense, one of the best tight ends, and two 1,000 yard rushers would be too overwhelming against a team with no true deep threats and average rushing. I don’t know, when the season starts I’ll take my final stance.

Who do you think will win Heisman? How about the title game? Any predictions?

As of right now I think Kansas will win in basketball and LSU in football. For Heisman I’m thinking its gonna be another close race between McCoy and Bradford.

leeznon, you shouldn’t have thoughts like that. You gotta be a little more positive than that man. I’m not saying that Texas is gonna win it all either. Heck, crazy things happen in college football every year. Yet OTOH, I’m HOPING that they will win all the way this year whether we have a solid playmaker or not (Note: Colt McCoy is our solid playmaker). And are you forgetting Jordan Shipley? That guy is gonna be a stud. And then there’s Malcolm Kelly who pretty much brought momentum for Texas in that Texas/TT game. That guy is a rising star and who knows how good he’s gonna be. Just take breather, and wait for the season to start before you make any judgements. Heck, before the 2007 season, nobody knew Bradford was gonna be that good. Same goes for McCoy. Just wait it out man.

Our running game wasn’t all that great because our OL just couldn’t get to it then. Hopefully it will improve come this season.

I never do predictions for Heisman, but I’m rooting for Colt all the way. Basketball: Kansas. Football: Florida. The Gators have the entire defense coming back from last year which is scary. Remember, they stopped OU on the 1 yd. line in the MNC game. Not to mention Tim Tebow. And their incoming freshman Andre Debose is damn good too. Some say he’s a Percy Harvin clone. We’ll see.

Oh yeah Debose is gonna be awesome, it’s gonna be hard to fill the shoes of Percy though. UF is gonna be really tough as always. I think Kansas is the heavy basketball favorite, they have the best talent by far.

Yeah I’m a pessimistic fan because I hate having high hopes for a team and then be disappointed in the end. I also look at the big picture rather than making predictions because I’m a fan of one team. My predictions are usually right though  jk

Does anyone know how much tickets for football and basketball games cost? Do they sell out fast?

Well, if there’s anything I can change in college football, it’d be for a damn playoff system. It’s ridiculous they don’t have one. Then again, if I want to watch the best football team outta Texas, it’s the Dallas Cowboys.

ITA re playoff system.

There’s been talk that Congress might step in and change the BCS system. There was a hearing today and hopefully it’ll eventually change. I love the idea of an 18 team playoff because it gives everyone an equal chance. They should do what’s best for the fans.

Don’t forget about the Houston Texans, the team on the rise. They have huge potential and as long as they limit turnovers they can be a playoff team this year. I feel bad for the Cowboys, the NFC East is too tough.

Haha the Texans are laughable. Your sports knowledge is kinda iffy…

But UT is nowhere near the Dallas Mavericks. Last season they lost one game, away from home, to a top ten team, by six points, at the last second. They got screwed by random polls from people from places like California and Maine where they don’t have good football who decided that OU was better than Texas despite Texas’ double-digit win at a neutral field. Sure, they could have beaten Tech, and we choked that game, but you can’t say Texas didn’t get it done last season, because that means that not a single team in the country got it done. Plus Texas won a title in 2005, something the Mavs have failed to do.

Big thing to remember–the national title is decided on one game, and it’s really who plays better day of. I fully expect it to be Texas vs. Florida, and I have no clue who will win because they are both excellent teams and Texas’ offense this year is going to be outstanding–better than last year’s and better than OU’s last year as well. Our defense needs to step up a notch but I think we can take them.

And the Heisman voters don’t like to give out second Heismans–if Colt has an equal season to Tebow and Bradford, the trophy’s his.

My sports knowledge is definitely not iffy.

The Texans are not laughable at all, they are exactly what I said “the team on the rise… huge potential…as long as they don’t turn the ball over”. By no means am I saying they will win it all, just saying they are competitive. Anyone with a high football IQ knows that they are a great team, arguably the best WR in the NFL (Andre Johnson), Matt Schaub (pretty good QB with a high QB rating) was injured most of last year, amazing RB (Steve Slaton), great under-rated pro bowl TE (Daniels), one of the best DE (Williams), unbelievable LB core (Ryans and Cushing: the rookie), and a good secondary with Reeves. They have been an 8-8 team 2 years in a row, so yes they have huge potential. Last year they were 7th in total TDs, 7th in rushing TDs, and 7th in passing TDs.

I was comparing the UT football program of the last 2 years to the Mavericks of the last decade (specifically in the 2006 Finals). My comparison means that I feel like they can be competitive and get to a championship game but not win it. I was comparing how a Dirk is like McCoy and D-Wade is like a Tebow or Bradford; how the Mavs program is like a UT program, well respected but not comparable to the Lakers or Celtics (like a recent USC or Florida).

Just because Archie Griffin is the only player to win the Heisman back-to-back times doesn’t mean that they don’t like giving out second Heismans. Heisman voters give the trophy to the best player, they could care less if they’ve won it before. They gave it to the best player statistically, in Bradford last season, and will give it to the best player statistically this year.

Edit: I was comparing how a Dirk is like McCoy whereas D-Wade & Shaq are like a Bradford & Gresham or Tebow & UF speed.

Another comparison could be between UT and the OSU of the last few years. Well respected teams in conferences that are questionable. Comparing Troy Smith with Colt McCoy; teams with a powerful style; and the perception of having “weak” defenses in “weak” defensive conferences.

See you can compare the Mavs with the Longhorns, both got screwed by their league.

That was the worst no call ever!

Incoming freshmen who are sports fans -

Are you set for getting your LASP and getting your football season tickets so you are sitting with a “Student Reserved Seat Season Football Ticket Group”? I remember this was a bit of a challenge for the out-of-state incoming freshmen last year and my recollection is that there was a bit of a time crunch in June or July to be sure to get your football season ticket and to be sure to find a group.

Dude, you guys are overlooking Texas A&M. You forgot what we have…damn nevermind. I got nothing. Haha.

DP

For the season tickets, it really doesn’t matter whose in your group. You just need one ticket in a section to have a whole mess of people sit there–that person just prints multiple copies of their ticket so everyone can get into the section.

All you need is a ticket to the game and you can really sit anywhere you want if you know the right people.
