OFFICIAL Math 2C Calculator Programs Thread for January 22

you really dont need programs... if you did well in precalc you should do fine without them

ok ashernm@msn.com

i can bet that you won't use your selection of programs more than once.

i also bet that if you don't practice A LOT with solver, u will occasionally use it for the wrong purposes or it won't give u a clearcut answer. it'll waste a valuable amount of time and really **** you off during the test. you often have to simplify the problem a tad for solver to work.

gist: get like 2 or 3 programs that u use the most often. practice with them and all the funcitons of Ti89 A LOT. practice using copy paste in ti89 and all those neatos and try out some weird stuff just in case. (ie: parametric graphing)

triangle solvers are very easy to use. I actually wrote half of mine after copying the other half off the net. The programs will save you time if you know how to use them but the inherent calculator functions are usually even better.

Anyone that could help me, it would be greatly appreciated. I can't manage to connect my TI-89 using the silver cable link. It says TI-89 detected, but couldn't get status. My TI-83 works, so it must be something with the calculator or settings. Anyone know what I should do? I need these programs.

edit: if someone could im me to help me out, it'd be good sn:dodgerfanJeff

My TI89 came with a USB cord. Try that if you have one. Otherwise you might have to fiddle with your USB settings somehow, or peripheral settings.

I'm still not sure what the problem is. I installed all drivers and everything, and it works with my ti 83, just not my ti 89. How do I know if I recieved the programs anyway? Does it confirm it? I got to 2nd var link and I don't see anything new, so I assume it isn't working.

asher, do you think you could send me or show me a link to the coordinate triangle solver and the angle between two intersecting lines, I can't seem to find those programs. My email is jstern32@yahoo.com

Also, is there anywhere that tells you how to use these programs? I'm not sure how to enter stuff into my ti89.

It's much easier to make a "program" with all the formulas you know you might forget and list them in a "program." When you need to use it, just go to program --> edit, and read the formula.

dodger I just did the custom menu thing that hoaginc said and it is such a help if you use external programs on the 89. You put in the program titles where it says Item "Program name" but everything else is the same. Its really helpful.

In addition to what hoaginc wrote, put () after every program name so that you dont have to type those each time.

thanks asher. Where did you get the coordinate triangle solver program, and the angle between two intersecting line one? I can't seem to find those.

didnt I email it to you? Well here is the coordinate triangle area: <a href="http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/100/10039.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/100/10039.html</a>

Distance between a point and a line: Point Line Solver 2004!
his Program finds the missing point and the distance between two points when only one line equation and one point is given. This is a very useful program that can shave minutes off of your homework <a href="http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/352/35224.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/352/35224.html</a></p>

Can someone find me a program for determining the supplementary angles between two lines? Tan^-1((m1-m2)/(1+m1m2)) I think thats it.
why cant I edit my first post, to put in the URLs?

Thanks again asher, you are a lifesaver.

Anyone who has taken the test, or is practicing, did anyone else notice that when the pictures are drawn to scale (as many of them are), you can sometimes find the answer by just putting your page up to another line on the picture that is already known and estimating the length of the unknown? I was doing a practice test and didn't have much time left, so I decided to use this method on some of the harder ones. It works great if the answers aren't that close.

i have the ti-84 plus silver edition am i allowed to use that?

islanders yes you may. The rule is you can use anything that doesnt need to be plugged in, cannot be able to print, cannot have a qwerty keyboard (what if you put it in dvorak combo?? heh), and no PDAs laptops, minicomputers.
dodgerblue maybe for that reason you cant (i think) bring a ruler, compass, or protractor to the test.

Yeah, I measured with a protractor and all the angles are correct. It can come in handy for narrowing down the answers to 2 out of 5.

When I used the TI-89 on my SAT IIC, I felt like I was cheating or something. The calculuator is really too powerful and almost eliminates the need for any computational capability. But that is probably a good thing.

One warning is that you should really know how your calculator works. Don't try something new just before the test. Do it the way you know. I use to have trouble understanding the way the calculator displayed its answers, but now I don't have any problems.

Bring extra batteries. Bring extra batteries. Bring extra batteries. I said it three times before I know of people that took their SAT I/IIs and the AP Calculus exams and had their batteries run out. No batteries = No calculator, No calculator = Slow computations, Slow computations = wasted time...

Iam ill probably go on a moral crusade against CB enabling the use of 89s on the IIC, after I get my 800 (or around there). Heh.

Really though, it is an unfair advantage. They could at least try to lessen the advantages the rich have over the poor. They could just make a test that didnt require calculator use. Something related to this: My principal or teacher, cant remember told my class that CB stopped the practice where you could cancel your SATII, because rich kids would just take it over and over, but poor kids couldnt. Is that the real reason? Or is it because of cheating?

I remember reading somewhere that the College Board admits that students using a graphing calculator do better than the students that do not.

Personally, I think that most of the people taking the SATII Math IIC are students that have done relatively well in their math courses in high school and have or are in the process of taking math courses such as precalculus. And everyone (at least at my school) who was taking precalculus was nearly required to have graphing calculator.

That being said, I do think that the TI89 probably gives an advantage to those that KNOW how to use it. I know people with TI89s that barely know how to use the graphing function and struggle to use it for division...

In regards to cancelling your SATII Math I/IIC score, it is still possible. However, you have to cancel the scores for all of the tests that you were taking that particular day. Otherwise, the only way to cancel scores is when there is a calculator malfunction.

But it probably isn't a good idea to take the test and then cancel for practice. I believe that the cancellations still show up on your record, but I am not sure about that. Cancelling and retaking can also be quite expensive, since by the time you cancel, you might already have to pay for late registration on the next adminstration of the test. The worst part however is that you have to wait for the next test date... and time isn't a luxury that we have.

No Iamtheevilest, before you could cancel your test after you got the score. Also if CB enabled cancelling one out of 2 tests on the same day, they would be enabling cheating. A person could just take 2 hours for one test and answer one question on the second test, then cancel the score of the 2nd test. Taking a real CB test for practice is just a waste. Damn I wish i could get the saturday test book for practice because I am taking it sunday. I'll just have to read what people post sat night.

In my math class, everyone has 83s, except me, and I only got the 89 recently. There is only one other kid in the highschool with an 89 out of like 180 kids.

The Math IIC test takers are kind of self selective anyway, leading to a high test average. Is the IIC curve high because otherwise it would not make sense to take higher math? Or because you are generally taking it with people much smarter than say the average SAT taker?
