OFFICIAL Math 2C Calculator Programs Thread for January 22

I am gathering a list of programs for IIC, for the TI-83 and TI-89 calculators (I have both and plan to use both) I found a good old CC thread: <a href="http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?69/94268%5B/url%5D">http://www.collegeconfidential.com/cgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?69/94268</a></p>

Here is the list so far:
Conics section
Area/Surface Area (probably not very helpful judging on the practice tests I have seen)
Triangle solver using law of sines and cosines
Angle between two intersecting lines
Arithmetic Number Calculator
3D Coordinate Program
Distance Between Two Points
Midpoint Formula (questionable)
Distance between a point and a line
Quadratic formula
Slope formula
trig simplify for 89
finverse for 89 I think.
picture of unit circle
vangle- angle between two vectors
series and sequence problems...just fill in the blanks of the formulas
Coordinate triangle area solver.
Polar Coordinate converter (is there a program to convert like r=sinx so x^2 +y^2=y?)
Vector addition and whatnot.

Also please discuss the basic functions that are built in to your respective calculator. For the TI-83 there are lots of things I found out. For limits you can put them in Y=, 2nd format, set independent variable to ask, and put in a number close to the limit in the table section and you get the answer. If the limit is 4 you put in 3.9999 in the table for an x value and the answer comes out in the y table. There is the math section for factorials and nPr and nCr. You can put a equation in y= and find its remainder through y1(what you want to divide by) and gives the remainder. y1 is vars yvars function i think, probably wrong though.

Another thing with TIs: If a problem is a geometric sequence of some sort, like A0=5 and An=Asubscript(n-1) +3. Find Asubscript 3, then you type 5, press enter, then 2nd answer +3 and press enter three times.

Can someone tell me the TI-89 functions, I just got mine. You can solve, factor, expand an equation on it, and all sorts of things but can you please just say what you know for it? thanks.

I have found that in general programs are better if they have one task. If they are everything programs they take up a lot of memory and are annoying to load and such.
For solving trig on the 89 like 2cosx=1 (I know its simple, but for example sake) you do I think solve(2cosx=1,x)xlx>0 and X<2(pi symbol).

most of these programs just compute an equation for u. it's much simpler to just learn the equation and type it in.

if u have the ti89, you won't really need any more programs.
the ones that would be most worth it is (to save time):
pythagorean theorem (2 or 3 points)
conics (topic is ez to forget)
and maybe a few more if it saves u time.

I think the programs are a bit overrated. They're not needed that badly really

by the way, using a program called "shapes" to find volumes quickly, i found errors in the program. it miscalculated the sa or a cylinder. i don't know how well i could trust some of these programs.

hey, i know its a stupid question but:
how do you guys actually put the formulas into the calc? do you type them in or is there a faster method? like downloading it directly on the ti-89..
thanks

Pythagorean Theorem? As in a^2 +B^2=C^2? Do you mean fundamental trigonometric identities like cos^2 +Sin^2=1?

Also on a TI-83you can write in a equation in y=. y=0 on the parabola, you have a correct value for x, when your equation is equal to zero.

By the way, how do you find the area of a coordinate triangle, using one side for the base and then distance formula for the height?

My plan is to use the TI-83 for basic calculations and programs and the 89 for algebraic and trigonometric stuff.
Is there any faster way to access programs for the 89? Going through varlink is kind of slow.
If you know any tricks you can do on your calculator without outside programs, post em.

Stauch you could type them or probably find a list online at ticalc.org

i thought u were only allowed to use 1 calculator...

aries do you have a link for that? Someone told me to bring both. I will check CBs website.

Nope not true at all.
"If your calculator malfunctions and you don't have a backup calculator or extra batteries, you may, if you wish, cancel scores on the Math Level 1 or Math Level 2 tests. "
The assumption is that you can bring two calculators.

bump, people taking the test probably arent seeing it.

How about we compile a list of the most important programs. I need to get them soon.

I think the triangle solver will save a lot of time for one.
Other than that, I haven't used any programs yet, so I need some recs.

I recommend the triangle solver, conics section, Angle between two intersecting lines, distance between 2 points, coordinate triangle solver, and maybe some sequence solvers.
Know how to use the nPr and nCr functions, and the ! function. its in the math menu.

does the coordinate triangle solver solve for area, angles, side lengths, etc with just the x and y coordinates of the vertices? If so, wow that is very helpful. I need to start getting some of these programs.

dodgerblue it does just that, with the 3 pairs of coordinates.

ashemm, you can write your own custom menu, just like the one on the Home screen. No more typing :)

hoanginc can you tell me how or give me a link to program/guide that would make the program system like the ti83 where it is just a menu of executable files, not of all the files like on the default TI-89 interface.

I searched ticalc.org and found this program that would help you make a custom menu :

<a href="http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/258/25879.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.ticalc.org/archives/files/fileinfo/258/25879.html</a></p>

I was talking about changing the interface on an 89 not on the 83. Thanks anyway.

Sorry, my bad. This is an example that I wrote for my Ti-89:

()
Prgm
Custom
Title "Test"
Item ">"
Item "<"
Item "#"
Title "Exp"
Item "log()/log()"
Item "log("
Item "ln("
EndCustm
EndPrgm

All you need to do is run the program. You will then access the menu you've just created by pressing the 2nd key + the key that has the word CUSTOM written in blue above it, can't remember it cause I don't have my cal with me.

What happened to actually doing math?

Don't mind me. I'm just bitter.

bump for the people takin the test.
