Official MIT 2011 EA Decision Thread

Decision: ACCEPTED!! OH MY GOD
Stats:

* SAT: 740M 800CR 800W
* SAT IIs: 730 Physics, 800 Literature, 800 Math IIC
* GPA: - 3.96 uw, 4.25 w
* Rank: unranked
* Other stats:

Subjective:

* Essays: I think my Rice one was actually better... but they were still pretty good. I wrote a supplemental one about how much I wanted to go to MIT, and also submitted a copy of my UChicago "describe yourself as a mathematical function."
* Teacher Recs: One of them was from my chem teacher, who is an MIT alum. My other one required this big form with short answers and stuff for her rec, so it was better than perhaps one where the teacher just whips something up.
* Counselor Rec: All right - she really likes me, but we don't chat all the time, or anything.
* Hook (if any): None, really... I co-founded my schools chapter of Mu Alpha Theta, and I'm a theater kid..?

Location/Person:

* State or Country: Texas
* School Type: Catholic all-girls HS
* Ethnicity: caucasian
* Gender: female

Other Factors:

* Extracurriculars: Theater, mostly... also Girl Scouts and tap and fencing and some other...things... I'm too excited to list everything!
* Why I think I was accepted/deferred: I have no idea... I think I showed my passion in my essays, and had strong numbers. I just... EEE!
* Other thoughts: OH MY GOD I cannot believe it...!!

*Decision: ACCEPTED *

General Comments: Must go hyperventilate now... I was 90% sure I was gonna get deferred and then rejected RD 'cause I am sooo the cookie-cutter Asian

I am an asian guy, still got in. lol. So hehe, good luck to all.

deferred..
but i got into columbia on thursday so i'm happy!

Decision: Deferred

Stats:[ul]
[] SAT: M760, CR750, W690 (Scores from 2005)
[] SAT IIs: Math II - 760, World History - 780, Chemistry - 760
[] GPA: 4.0/4.0 (Unweighted)
[] Rank: Not ranked, but top 1% of my class
[li] Other stats: 6 AP Tests, all 5's - Chemistry, World History, US Gov/Pol, English Language, Statistics, Computer Science AB[/li]National Merit Semifinalist

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I thought they were pretty good; a spin on a common topic.
[] Teacher Recs: One should've been glowing, the other probably as well
[] Counselor Rec: A weakness. Counselors at my school deal with 100 seniors each. I wouldn't be surprised if she just used the recommendation she wrote for National Merit and then forgot to change NM to MIT.
[] Hook (if any): Unique major, Atmospheric Science; have real-life working experience at the NWS in this field
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Kentucky
[] School Type: Public, most competitive (#8 in nation for total number of NMSF's this year)
[] Ethnicity: White
[] Gender: M
[/ul]Other Factors:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars:
Eagle Scout,
over 300 Hours Community Service, with about 1/3 with me in charge as project coordinator,
Captain of my high school's Varsity Quiz Bowl Team (competes at NAQT HS NC and PACE every year, placed 7th and 12th in the past 2 years)
Assistant Concertmaster of the Louisville Youth Orchestra,
Violin for 10 years - (not competitive with it, but play for fun, make it to All-State, stuff like that, featured on From the Top w/ my orch)
President of my high school's Young Democrats club for two years, extremely politically active,
Not active in research, but competitor with some intriguing un-mentored projects at the local/state level (last year with a partner, we used evolutionary programming to evolve algorithms that could perform pattern recognition on EEG data, if we had a mentor we probably could've been even more successful than we were),
Work as a programmer for a local IT company,
Unique major - Atmospheric Science,
Volunteer/work at the National Weather Service's local office,
Varsity Swimmer at my High School,
there's more, but these are the big ones
[] Why I think I was accepted/deferred: Je ne sais pas. I thought I was really competitive, but I guess it's true that it's just a crap-shoot. There were 12 people from my HS that applied early admissions, and none of us are any better than the others (they have higher SAT's because they took it EACH time this fall, and I didn't feel like adding any points over my score as a Sophomore would improve my chances).
[li] Other thoughts: I'll never know if I get accepted or not; I'm planning on being accepted to Cornell ED (through a relative, I've spoken with the right people...), so I'll be withdrawing my application later next week.[/li][/ul]

To be honest, I wasn't really expecting to get in. I know it's a crap-shoot, and after visiting MIT and Cornell back to back, I decided that Cornell would be the better place for me to spend my Undergraduate years. But... would've been nice for my ego :)

I'm just going to be extremely disappointed when I found out which of my friends from school get in. 3/4 of them are really nerdy, and to be honest, I'm jealous that they'll get the chance to go to MIT whereas I won't. But that's the way the cookie crumbles. ;)

ACCEPTED WHAT WHAT?!

Forget my stats now... ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

merci merci MIT
