[/ul]Other Factors (weaknesses, strengths, etc.): No clue... I moved to America in 8th grade.. if that helped or not

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: To be honest, I'm kind of disappointed. But seeing so many 2300s getting rejected, I see that scores really don't matter anymore. Oh well, I get one more chance at penn and other places for regular. May turn out to be better for me, may not. Oh yeah, so I'm deferred... What do I do about Penn now?

As for the scores. I guess Penn finally realized that scores aren't that important. The evaluation is definitely holistic. Getting a high school shouldn't matter that much. Although my scores aren't bad, but I think I got in because of the other things that showed in my app.

The danger of getting a high score is that schools might think you don't have a life or a passion...unless the passion is for SAT... Therefore, they will be very skeptical of the rest of your app. Just be careful with your apps when you have a high score. Don't think that the score will help you. Just think what else you can show to make you stand out and let the committee know that you actually have a passion for other stuff.

How can the one test that everyone across the country takes not be considered important?

I mean, GPA is basically meaningless to me. That really is as much a reflection about the school and the teachers than about the person.

Essays should probably be as heavily weighted as they are.

Interviews should really become completely irrelevant except in cases of "this person absolutely must be denied entrance here." I mean, there are different interviewers who have different interviewing styles, and when you couple that with the natural nervous associated with this-could-be-my-future, you might not always get the best chance to express yourself.

Just because everyone takes it, doesn't mean the test is fair or flawless. Some people get high scores from taking prep classes. Generally, those who are rich get higher scores. You can actually increase your score by doing lots of practices..which defeats the point of an "aptitude test."

SAT's are important, but its just part of a lot of other factors. GPA is looked at in the context of your school, and it shows how well you can perform in difficult classes for a long period of time. Basically GPA's indicates how well you can acquire knowledge on the certain subject area. A lot of kids in my school from previous years have 1500+ SAT scores, but many do not have 3.8 + GPA's. Since SAT can be superscored and students are now able to choose what scores to send, the actual importance might have decreased.

I disagree with the SAT hypothesis (maybe only b/c I had a 2340 and therefore want to believe that it helped rather than hurt). I took it twice, 2270 the first time and 2300 the second; no prep courses (no monetary issues either though), I just studied out of the books...eh who cares at this point??!!!! My school is doing really well this year: 6 to Cornell, 2 Columbia, and 3 Penn (including me!).

Decision: ACCEPTED!

Stats:[ul]
[] School applied to: CAS
[] SAT Verbal: 780
[] SAT Math: 700
[] SAT Writing: 770
[] SAT Total: 2250
[] SAT II: US History 760, Spanish 600, Math II 670
=P chyeahh. abysmal Spanish and Math II scores....the rest of you made for a harsh curve! haha
[] ACT: 31
[] AP/IB taken/scores: USH 4, Lit 4, Stat 4
[] GPA weighted: 4.45
[] GPA unweighted: 4.0
[li] Rank or % estimate: 1/259
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I honestly think my essays are what got me in (not meaning to be boastful at all!!!) because my ECs weren't super unique while my essays were on very unique topics.
[] Optional Essay?(Y/N): Yup. This one was extremely personal.
[] Teacher Recs: The one I got to read was good; said I was one of the best in her 16 yr career. The other one i didnt get to read since it was sent directly, but im guessing its good b/c she was my scientific research teacher who has taught for like 30-ish some years and is now retired. she is notorious for writing amazing recs.
[] Counselor Rec: yeahh. about that. idk how good it was, but i have a feeling it was probably really really generic because he has so many other kids to write stuff for.
[] Supplemental Rec(s)?: Nope
[] Hook (if any): First generation?? essays
[li] Interview?: Yup. Went ok. i wouldnt say stellar oh-my-gosh amazing but it was good. just a regular convo. though he couldve smiled more.
[/li]

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: Amish country, baby!! no, im not amish. =P and yes, there is more here than cows.
[] School Type: Public
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Female, despite my username which is actually a bible verse. but yeah, bad choice on my part when it comes down to gender haha
[] Financial Aid?(Y/N): Yup
[] Legacy Yes/No: Nope
[] Recruited Yes/No: Nope. Now, if there were such a thing as pro-procrastination, then it might be a different story.
[] Important ECs: Science fair awards, though i never did anything on the national scale, just local stuff and of course leadership positions in honor societies, school publications, leadership seminars, and other stuff. pretty generic i think.

[/ul]Other Factors (weaknesses, strengths, etc.): I think my essays were just really raw in the sense that i didnt try to be some ideal that i thought penn would like. i wrote with PASSION and HONESTY and i really do think that was key.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: I still can't believe that i am going to the school i thought i could only DREAM about when i was in 9th grade! I cannot WAIT to meet everybody! and to those who were deferred/rejected...i know with certainty that you will succeed wherever you attend b/c like all penn applicants, you are intelligent. you are insightful. and you are driven. best of luck.

High SAT scores will definitely help if your rest of the app looks nice. Because if you have a high SAT score, that means school work should be a bit easier for you than the many other students in the school. Therefore, you should be able to spend the same amount of time on other activities, just as a student who scores below 2250. If the rest of app doesn't look too good, a high SAT score doesn't do much and might even let the adcom think you don't do anything but SAT or w/e.

forgot to mention that i didnt send my official ACT scores until later and i dont think penn even got it in time b/c it was still listed on the outstanding materials page as of thursday night

(First post here. I've been a lurker, haha)

[li] Rank or % estimate: Not reported (I would guess 10%-ish)
[/li]

[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Essays: I write. My essays kicked major ass, especially my "Why Penn?" Considering that I applied with an interest in English, I think they really paid attention to how well they were written.
[] Optional Essay?(Y/N): Yes; loved writing it! Neat topic.
[] Teacher Recs: Excellent--I'm even somewhat close with the teachers.
[] Counselor Rec: Excellent
[] Supplemental Rec(s)?: I had a professor from a course taken over the summer send one, but the Penn Portal never showed it so who knows
[] Hook (if any): Esteemed private school at which I took the highest level classes, legacy, strong essays/SAT writing score for a prospective English major

[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] State or Country: NJ
[] School Type: Private
[] Ethnicity: Caucasian

[] Financial Aid?(Y/N): No
[] Legacy Yes/No: YES
[] Recruited Yes/No: NO
[] Important ECs: Editor-in-Chief of my school paper, some random community service etc.

[/ul]Other Factors (weaknesses, strengths, etc.): I think I just had exceptionally strong reasons for wanting to go to Penn and made them very clear: the Philly community in which I have already made connections, the fact that Penn is so special to my family since a lot of my relatives have gone, the fact that Penn was the first liberal arts institution ever created and I want liberal arts before going to grad school for journalism... stuff like that. I was extremely specific about what I wanted on my app and I really think that that is what got me accepted. And of course my status as a legacy probably helped, I won't lie.

General Comments/Congratulations/etc: I am UNBELIEVABLY shocked/excited! UPENN '13!

mishiemash837, this was my first post too and I've been a shameless lurker for a while, haha. :)

Congrats guys!
