State (if domestic applicant): South Carolina
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public with 1 national merit every so often (moi)
Ethnicity: African American
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: I’m not sure. I get free lunch at school.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM (African American)
Reflection
Strengths: Test scores (for an AA…), URM status, well-written essays (writing is my ‘thing’), Activism, Overcoming hardship (I’m poor, and my parents basically just tolerate me, at best), recs (I made it my mission in life to get everyone who would one day write for me to love me a lot and basically succeeded)
Weaknesses: Not too many ECs, no show of academic interests in my ECs, Class rank, — basically everything except my strengths
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m pretty well-qualified, I’m black, and my essays were killer
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected from Yale, Dartmouth…likelied into Vandy, Cornell, in at OSU, in at Duke (BN Duke Scholarship Finalist)
General Comments: Same as Duke. Crazy crazy crazy. I don’t deserve this, I definitely don’t deserve this scholarship. This whole process is arbitrary and stupid and unfair I’m sorry. >.<

**General Comments & Advice: When I visited campus I knew Princeton was the school for me.
Reflection

Strengths: GPA, big awards, SAT IIs, ECs, essays?
Weaknesses: SAT I, essays?
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Tough competition.

Accept: CV scholar to Vanderbilt (full ride), W&L full ride, UNC, W&M, some smaller ones.
Waitlisted: Dartmouth, Wash U, Duke, Emory.
Rejected: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Rice.
Waiting: Stanford, Amherst.

General Comments: Unless I get lucky tomorrow, I’ll prob end up at Vanderbilt with a full ride! Overall, I am kinda disappointed with results. I thought with STS and ISEF, I’d at least get into one ivy. It is what it is though. Life goes on.

Note to future applicants: It’s tough. There’s a ridiculous amount of applicants and very few spots. You REALLY need to have good essays to stand out. Work on them like no other - you won’t regret it.

Decision: Deferred -> Rejected

[] U.S. State/Territory or Country: New York
[] School Type: International

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Some interesting ECs, a decent high school career
[] Weaknesses: SAT Is and IIs
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I don’t have too many distinguishing awards or leadership roles, so that might have been a factor.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to UChi, JHU, Cornell, and William and Mary. Denied from Columbia, Duke, Carnegie Mellon, and Yale.[/ul]

General Comments & Advice:

If there’s anything I could emphasize, it’s that this whole process is unpredictable. In some of the other threads, there were kids with 2400 SATs, 4.0 GPAs and great ECs that were still not making the cut. At this point in time, and probably far into the future, an Ivy League application is something to never count as a guarantee. Be open, don’t listen so much to the names - but give it your best effort.

I’m not too disappointed over the decision, though it remained my first choice. Congratulations to all of those who made it in. As a united class of 2017, regardless of what college, let’s make our mark.

[] Common App Essay: I liked it a lot (and so did two of my teachers who read it). Wrote about music (a specific symphony) and its impact on me.
[] Supplement Essay: Also liked this one - reused it for a few of my college supplements. Wrote about my ethnicity and how it has shaped the way I live.
[] Additional Essay/Engineering Essay: N/A[/ul]
[li] Recommendations (teacher’s subject, 1-10 rating, details):[ul][/li][li] Teacher Recommendation #1: Math - didn’t read.[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: Chem - didn’t read.
[] Counselor Rec: No idea… didn’t read either.
[] Additional Info/Rec: I mailed a research paper that I wrote from a summer program. [/ul]
[] Interview: HAHA this didn’t go well at all. I literally couldn’t relate to my interviewer in any way and she spent over half the interview asking me why I wanted to go to Princeton and quizzing me on my Princeton knowledge. I guess it didn’t really matter.
[] Art Supplement: I sent a music recording that was a lot shorter than the length they wanted… lol. YOLO or should I say YOLOLOLOL [/list]

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: Don’t remember, but I submitted before I heard back from my early action school on 12/14.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Test scores, essays, ECs? Honestly, admissions is so competitive, I don’t know what helped me stand out.
[] Weaknesses: Lack of any major awards or really any awards at all
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: They must have liked what they saw.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at Stanford (REA), Princeton, Yale, UCB/UCLA/UCD/UCSD. Rejected at MIT, USC.[/ul]

**General Comments & Advice: Done with all of my college decisions! It has definitely been a wild ride, but I’m thankful for everything. Most of all, though, I feel really lucky and blessed. I’m still a firm believer in that it doesn’t matter where you go, but what you make of the school once you’re there. Don’t worry! Everything will work out – just put in the effort and be the best version of yourself that you can (as cliche as it sounds). **

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Track, some community service at school, National Honor Society
Job/Work Experience: None.
Summer Activities: none last year. National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine, summer before junior year.
Essays: thought they were very good, and sincere. Family members (not me) strongly urged him to write about how having a mother with a disability made him want to become a doctor, but he did not want to write that because it’s not really the reason he wants to be a doctor. Also, he feels it’s not really all that tragic or different to have a mother who uses a wheelchair so did not want to write about that. I think he was right to not write a fake essay. He wWrote about relationship with his best friend instead.
Teacher Recommendation: At least one of them was really great (math teacher)
Counselor Rec: Good.
Additional Rec: None
Interview: Thought it went well, although she almost forgot about the appointment!

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.

Reflection: Was his first choice and he got deferred for early action. Had visited the campus and really felt like it was the school for him. I’m sure he would have done well. He’s got the scores but nothing to make his application stand out (and no hooks). It was disappointing as well to not get into Duke, Brown, or Dartmouth. But he’s feeling okay and is pleased with the acceptances he has so far, and in the next 4 years hopes to have the experiences and take advantage of opportunities that will make him a more outstanding medical school applicant than an undergrad applicant. And relieved that the waiting for acceptances is almost over.
Strengths: Test scores, GPA, rigorous curriculum.
Weaknesses: ECs
Why you think you were denied: Test scores and grades, probably my essays and recommendations.
Where else were you accepted/rejected: Rejected: Duke, Brown, Dartmouth. Accepted: SUNY Geneseo, Emory (both with good FA). Still waiting on University of Rochester and College of Wooster.
