Rate out of 10
Essays:
Common App Essay: It was about my social anxiety and was pretty personal, it was reviewed by a lot of people and was pretty solid 8/10
Harvard Essay: It was about Kermit the Frog, and how he influenced my interest in patent law. It was weird and a risk but it was well written I think 8/10
Teacher Recommendation: Didn’t read, but my 10th grade English teacher is also an academic team coach and club sponsor and I know her really well, so I would be bold to say 9.5/10. My other rec was my Calc teacher liked me but admittedly doesn’t know me all that well so most likely 6/10
Counselor Rec: She sponsored a club I was in, but still hardly knew my name somehow? Undoubtedly not too good 4/10
Additional Rec: My bosses from the not for profit co-wrote a rec. They really liked me, and I still volunteer so I think a solid 8/10
Interview:

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes
Intended Major: Statistics
State (if domestic applicant):IN
Country (if international applicant): USA
School Type: large public
Ethnicity: Black and Hispanic
Gender: M
Income Bracket:
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, LGBT+
Reflection

Strengths: ECs, GPA had really strong upward trend, really rigorous workload
Weaknesses: GPA, scores, a lot of really smart people want to go to Princeton
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The essay was a risk, admittedly. It was a little weird in hopes of showing off my personality, but it might have flopped. Moreover, there are just a lot of really impressive people applying to Princeton
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected:
Accepted: UPenn, Cornell, UChicago, URochester, UWisconsin, IU
Waitlisted: Harvard
Rejected: Brown, Princeton, Yale

General Comments: I’m really OK with the results tbh. I feel like a lot of people who post rejections on CC have a huge chip on their collective shoulder. If you go in with a realistic mind-set, rejections sting a lot less.

ALSO: You can’t hear this enough. If you are applying to reach schools, please please please make sure you have a solid safety/targets to which you actually are OK with going!!! I was lucky enough to get into some reaches, but It’s really traumatizing to see people go to schools they hate because they didn’t plan out the “what if’s”.

This is really late but better late than never.

Reflection

Strengths: GPA, focused on several extracurriculars (large depth).
Weaknesses: lack of an additional subject test
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Got really good letters of recommendations, and I wrote pretty good essays. I also made the honor roll every quarter in my school which probably also helped.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Got into Princeton (attending), Harvard, Yale, Dartmouth and Cornell. Got rejected by Caltech.

General Comments : If anyone has any questions, please message me. I won’t be checking too often, but I can definitely help.

MODERATOR’S NOTE: This thread is for decisions ONLY. No other comments. I had to delete several posts.

@hodge812 Hi! I’m just really curious because I’ve seen you post on a few other threads, but just wondering, without being offensive at all, because very competitive schools have obviously liked you a lot, how did you get in with such a low GPA? I feel that your SAT is average, but I also have a low GPA (3.75 unweighted) and I feel like that is my biggest struggle in my application. Was there anything extraordinary that you did? Please reply back!

@Lexie73 your gpa is high enough. get over it and don’t spend too much time on it. i wrote an essay about being black and growing up in a white neighborhood. it was pretty personal to me, so i think that might be why i got in.

@hodge812 Hello,

I just wanted to say how did you do it?

Do you think the essays are what help people be accepted to selective colleges? And personally I have a GPA of 3.7. Should I stop focusing on my GPA and focus on other parts of the application, what did you do?

Please reply!

@AgentBK yeah, you’re fine. join extracurriculars. do what you like. get close to your teachers and have a fun time. now again, having a higher gpa would help… but you should be ok if you write really great essays. take the time to research colleges, etc
