Official RD 2020 Thread

lmao and there someone goes with the “check your privilege”

@psychlvr18 You have already informed us that your stats weren’t that great. Do you really expect people with higher stats, and more than likely just as good an application, to be happy that you got in over them? Best to stay off YOUR high horse, keep your mouth shut., and let people blow off their steam. Just be happy that you DID get in.

@helpfulandtrying
And with that attitude I can understand why each of you complainers didn’t get in. Not even in the IVY threads both here and on the Facebook groups have I seen so much disrespectful butt hurt over rejection . Disparaging admittees in the racist way you guys have makes it clear Vandy made the right choice to say move along.

@psychlvr18 @helpfulandtrying @IvyLeagueIsMine Lol I just think this is funny because I don’t understand why anyone would care why XYZ applicant got accepted or denied. An admissions decision is one small moment in your life. But most of all, an admissions decision is FINAL. Yup, thats right, you can’t change your decision by talking about it. You all have the opportunity to move on and continue to do great things whether you got accepted or denied.

@adamfromiowa You are absolutely right. I’ve actually said that in previous threads. I’m honestly just not used to seeing such negativity. But life goes on right? Thank you for reminding me of that. I genuinely hope everyone finds their right path in college and in general. Peace :v:

I just wanted to say thanks to you guys for defending the admissions of URM. I don’t speak for everyone but I’ve worked hard in high school and I happen to be Hispanic. This wouldn’t be the first time i have heard someone reduce admissions to race or ethnicity. And although myself and other people in my shoes so our best to ignore it, it does eventually worm your way into your head. I’m proud of what i did in high school and of my college options but reading posts like the ones above does make me wonder if my admission was due to my Ethnicity. I usually don’t posts things like this but i was surprised at my visceral reaction to the “ranting” posts and am really grateful to the people who quickly responded it.

And to the people who were ranting. I’m sorry you or the people you know didn’t get admitted. But blaming others and spouting negativity has never done any good. I want to go to college to make my little corner of the world a better place. And it is sad when a process that is meant to result in more aware and better citizens gets caught up in resentment and bitterness. I wish you all the best

@helpfulandtrying it’s disappointing that so many highly qualified and amazing people get rejected. So many people on here were far far more qualified than I am, and the coin just didn’t fall on their side. I’m grateful for an acceptance, and I am fully aware that I, perhaps, wouldn’t be granted the opportunity to study at an institution like Vandy without my hooks, but that doesn’t guarantee that anyone here, qualified or not, with hooks would get accepted. Admissions are confusing, weird, and 99% luck. We can all try and come up with why people with lower stats got in over those with higher stats, but at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter. We’ll never know what they spoke about in that admissions committee, and we’ll never know if they said “oh we need more minorities” or “she is a very driven applicant, and though she is under qualified, she definitely has the potential, passion, and ambition to succeed”. So I get you’re upset and trying to blow off steam, but there’s no reason for you to be upset that people with lower stats got in and you didn’t. If these types of situations didn’t exist, I’m not sure I’d believe the whole “holistic” process, as many low stats applicants are actually outstanding students that will, with an education like Vandy’s, make big contributions to the world.

Best of luck to you! :slight_smile:

Look, you can all stay off of my back. I never said that there was an acceptance or denial here. I was just trying to make a point for the other side. Be happy for yourself, but leave the ones that are extremely disappointed alone. This is my last comment, no matter what you say back. :slight_smile:

I don’t think stating what the admissions committee has put forth publicly is an attack on anyone except the admissions committee. Their holistic rhetoric really does not pan out. Again, just look at the microcosm exhibited here. Most with lower stats have hooks and it’s usually minority related in some way. It’s just a fact. Service and ECs don’t matter as much at Vanderbilt. The waitlist is full of those. I think the anger on this board is bc of that…

@str8up
The problem isn’t that you’re angry but that you’re pointing your anger at real people in a really ugly way. Reducing everyone’s accomplishments to their skin color is both rude and unhelpful.

You have a right to be disappointed.

You don’t have a right to be disrespectful.

PS- Ever occurred to you that maybe the holistic method includes accounting for the applicants shooling, past and income status? My family is poor and lives in a shitty part of cincy with little access to public transportation. My school cut all our clubs after the recession along with bussing. My uncle died right afterwards and then my mom lost her job.

How exactly was I supposed to get the same ECs as the wealthier kids on here?

How was I supposed to get community service when the closest volunteer place was 30mins. away and I didn’t get my license till senior year?

Yet I managed to pull through. I got a 29 act in a school district where getting a 20 was considered exceptional. I always had straight-A’s and managed to balance college online classes(the only perk my shitty high school had) so I will graduate with twenty credit.

I have overcome circumstances you people probably can’t comprehend and Vandy saw that through my essays and my recommendations.

To see you all ignorantly reduce the achievements of URM’s like me to just skin color shows you don’t have enough empathy and imagination to put yourself in another person’s shoes.

And this from someone who still uses r/TumblrInAction to make fun of SJW’s.

I am in Vandy Class of 2020 and I am glad you wouldn’t be joining me.

I most certainly never did that. The admissions committee is stirring that pot. I never said that I had a dog in this current fight, but I am extremely familiar with how vanderbilt works.

Never heard of tumblr and no clue what SJW even means. Is that directed toward me?

@str8up
Tumblr is a hyper liberal internet site that acts as a counterweight to the more conservative Reddit. Think Democrats vs. Republicans except on the internet. SJW is a pejorative used against people who put so much weight on political correctness that they refuse to acknowledge reason. They’re the idiots behind Oberlin’s fight against foreign foods and that crazy Mizzou professor who attacked a reporter back in September.

It is to show you that I am not someone fully on the PC Bandwagon. Personally, I consider myself center-left.

And yes you have been rude to real people. The way you have been posting makes it seem like the only part of us that got us in was our skin color. Not our achievements, or ability to overcome the circumstances which tried to hold us back but our skin color. Here’s one your quotes-

‘I agree, but I do think that it has become a completely un-Southern school in the middle of a great southern city…’

Can you not see how this can be misconstrued? How does Southern mean white? The south has the biggest concentration of black people in America and the second biggest hispanic concentration. If someone is raised and born in the south with southern mannerisms then how are they not southern? How do you know they are not predominantly drawing from the minorities in the big southern cities.

You’re probably going to say that its clear they are being racist because a white boy/girl got overlooked for a black boy/girl with less EC’S and community.

Well have you thought that black person couldn’t get those EC’s because they were too busy caring for their family or simply didn’t have the time/money for EC/Service? That those disadvantaged people poured their story out in a way which showed Vandy that they were good enough to be picked. Stats are not the end all, be all for a candidate or nobody would get in except the rich/upper middle class.

Southern is from the south, regardless of ethnicity. I am very sorry if I offended anyone personally. I do stand by the facts that have been put forth by the University in response to many inquiries in recent years as to their selection process. I truly hope you love Vanderbilt.

Here is a statistical profile of the Regular Decision Class of 2020.

Regular Decision applications: 28,700
Admitted: 2,526
Admit Rate: 8.8%
Percent of students in the top ten percent of their graduating class: 94%*
Middle 50% CR SAT: 740-800
Middle 50% M SAT: 760-800
Middle 50% ACT: 32-35
Percent of students who received one or more significant honors or held major leadership positions: 100%

So I guess this seals the ‘focus on scores’ debate…

Just a quick question, was it ever confirmed that the YES page glitch was indeed a predictor of acceptance? And if you didn’t get the glitch, did it mean rejection or Waitlist?

@cmartin12
Nope.

@IvyLeagueIsMine Nope to the first or second question?

@cmartin12
To both. That glitch didn’t mean anything.

Ok appreciate it!
