OFFICIAL School of Cinematic Arts 2014 Applicants/Results

I applied for Production and Critical Studies

"I’m going to talk to USC on AIM today to try and see how they decide how many spots are available for transfers. So for all you transfers out there interested in the Writing B.F.A, I’ll hopefully get an answer soon!

Oh wait, that’s just me… "

You’re not alone dude. I applied for the screenwriting program as a transfer too. Let me know what they say, I’m starting to get nervous that there won’t be many openings !

You know what? I think our chances our good wghiller, it looks like you and me are the only two who applied for transfering into screenwriting so far. So as long as they have two open spots for transfers you and me should be in. lol

Thamk you waitinginca, i will give that a try. I know everyone was either getting their info filled in or it said invalid, I thought i was the only one that had a blank screen but its good to hear that others did as well. Alos, looking at your son’s status progression and backdoor, I think its safe to say that he is in. Hopefully i’m right and i will be able to say congratulations to you within the next few days.

@corvin: If only it were that easy, right? I talked to SCA on the phone today. Here is my conversation:

Me: Do you know when transfers for the undergrad writing program will hear back? I know the typical date for transfers is June 1st, but I was thinking maybe it’s earlier since we’re basically in the same applicant pool as freshman?

SCA: One second, let me check.

Recorder plays some song I’ve never heard of.

SCA: Okay, they told me that you won’t hear until around June 1st with all of the other transfers.

Me: Oh. Well, I know the program is very selective and only takes 26 people. Is there a process for how many transfers are allowed in. My most important concern is this…what if all of the slots are alloted to freshman before anyone even looks at my application?

SCA: I don’t think there’s any particular special setup for transfers. All I can say is that you will hear back by June 1st.

Me(talking hesitantly, hoping that this isn’t the end of the conversation): Ok…well I appreciate your help…

SCA: No problem. Thanks, have a good day!

So yea, I’m extra worried. As I mentioned above…“what if all 26 slots are filled by freshman before anyone even looks at my application?”

anyone down for a USC summer program? :p

Freshmen acceptances dont affect transfers. According to the tour guide when I visted SCA the space available for transfers depends on the space that is left in the year you enter’s junior class. Meaning that someone needs to leave the writing program either freshmen or sophmore year for there to be an open slot for a transfer. (at least that’s how it is for production and I’m assuming its the same for all programs? it might not be though because production space is based on the amount of equipment they have sooooo yeah)

I’m THIS close to calling up the lady for Writing for Film and Television and asking her if all the slots have been filled

lol go ahead Im pretty sure they’re not but if it will make you feel better they will be more than happy to help you out. :]

@corby- Are you sure it’s like that for the writing program? I could see that being the case for production/critical studies/etc, but the writing program is a 4-year sequential program. So even though I’d be entering as a JR, I’d still have to take the same classes as freshman for four years.

So if a JR in the writing program drops out, that wouldn’t have an impact on me, right? Because I’d be taking the same classes as freshman, not juniors.

does this mean transferring into production/cstudies is practically impossible? who wants to drop out of production!? haha :s

well like i said I see how it applies to production and that was what the question was about when the tour guide said this, but it makes sense for writing as well, because while you might have to take a few freshmen classes you are still going to be a part of the junior class, so yeah. I’m about 98% positive that that is the case. They mentioned that transfering is a VERY tough process and not guaranteed because it is based on the space available.

@mitch lol yeah thats basically what they said when someone asked about transferring into production. as for Critical Studies I think their more lenient because they dont have to go by how much equpiment there is, and writing I can understand why they would want to keep the class sizes small so it might be the same case but im not sure. I’m just going by what they told us.

@wg I wonder if SCA evaluates freshman and transfers at the same time, and then USC analyzes them at different times. SCA might have higher, I don’t know, “expectations” I guess for transfers because they’ll be essentially restarting as freshman even though many of their GEs/electives will be out of the way. So SCA might have in mind 23 freshman and 3 transfers (I don’t know if these are real facts but they could have any number in mind) and then switch it up depending on what they see in the applicant. So if they have four really good transfers they could decide those over freshman, or the other way around.

And then USC has to approve of their decisions. SCA probably gets less transfer applications regardless.

This is just what I had in mind; I’m probably completely off.

@timish yeah we were just talking about that but im pretty sure SCA is just on a space available thing for transfers, becuase when i talked to them on the tour they made it pretty clear that transfering in was VERY difficult.

I really hope it’s not. The thing is, I really won’t be a part of the junior class at USC. I mean technically I will, but since I’ll be there four years, the whole classification doesn’t matter, you know? Otherwise I would be a senior for like the last 3 years before I graduate lol.

Here is the curriculum for the Writing B.F.A. Even though I’m a transfer and already have 46 hours, they won’t even let me jump ahead to year two or three of the program. So juniors and seniors should have no impact on me, right, because their only concern is having enough spaces in each Writing class for me. Is that what production is like?

@Tim- That’s what I was thinking, actually. I asked them and they said that wasn’t right, but who knows? I mean they have to have some(I do the stars b/c idk how to italicize on here, btw) idea of how to accept transfers. While it’s difficult, they wouldn’t have transfers even apply if there weren’t some spaces available, right?

And @corby–I definitely agree that transferring is probably extremely difficult. That’s not a good thing when the program you’re applying to only accepts 26 out of “thousands” to start with :)

hmmm yeah I see what you mean, and I understand where your coming rom because if you have to be there or 4 years anyway it really doesnt make sense… idk. And I’m not sure how production is set up for transfers either I was just going by what they said. I wouldnt worry though. For anyone transfer or freshmen, I mean we all already sent in our apps and have done all we can do so whatever happens happens.

@wghiller
yeah man, they must have a way to do it…
even on the myth vs reality on the sca website— I think they wanted to clear it up and ensure that people can transfer.

Yeah, Production/Critical Studies/etc are on a space-available basis for transfers but Writing isn’t because of the four-year requirements. That’s definitely right. But the way they pick transfers, I really don’t understand. Maybe the 26 number is just freshman and then they add a few transfers on that really stand out?
