Official University of Chicago 2020 Waitlisted Applicants Thread

@jk1998 It would leave admissions officers a very bad impression of your high school. I’m serious… If you don’t mean it, don’t say it. Think about all the future applicants from your school.

Looks like waitlist pool is larger than ever! Anyways, I am no a same boat as you guys are. I am an international student from Nepal. Best of luck guys

@AvatarRoku Oh okay! Thanks so much!

@TrazCapDEV Oh thank you! But if you hypothetically couldn’t go bc of financial reasons, it’d be okay right? (The only thing I can do as a waitlisted applicant who has to wait again is imagine up scenarios ^^;; sorry)

I was also deferred and then waitlisted. I know I should be optimistic about that, but it’s getting two maybes in a row…

Hey, why do you all say we should send the letter of interest before ivy day? I’m not really getting the reason.

Hi,
I was also waitlisted at UChicago. I’m a little confused about the waiting list though.
So, if I choose to accept a spot on the waitlist, and if I get accepted, is the decision binding?
I heard that the waitlist results come out in mid May. What happens if I’ve gotten rejected then? Isn’t the date to confirm with a university May 1st?

@EliteGoals, it is not binding. And the idea, if on a waitlist, is that you go ahead with the assumption that you will not get in, and make arrangements with another college by May 1st to attend. If for some reason you are called off the waitlist for UChicago, you then have the option of either telling the college you accepted that you are withdrawing your acceptance (may involve losing your deposit if sent in) or telling UChicago that you are declining the offer off the waitlist because you would prefer to go to the college you already accepted.

Ahhhhhhhh I’m so conflicted. UChicago is one of my three top choices and I would love to attend but I can’t help but have (futile) hope for Ivy Day. Ahhhhhhhhh I can’t decide if I should get my counselor to call UChicago and say I’ll go unconditionally if I’m accepted. I know I prolly won’t get accepted into the Ivies I want but there’s still a stubborn flicker of hope in me that’s holding me back from getting my counselor to call rn

waitlisted as well here… but found out i got into McGill Uni yesterday so im a little more at ease

Wow… I was excited about the waitlist but you’ve all made me very depressed… This sucks.

When they take kids off wait list by region, is that by state or by general regions (new England, for example)?

And don’t feel depressed about the waitlist! Although it is disappointing, considering the number of applicants who were rejected, however unlikely, it is an incredible opportunity @mapodoufu

@soph1112 Hey, saw your post from a few days back! NIce to see another astrophysics major intending applicant!
I hope you get accepted in a nice school, if not UChicago (although honestly, UChicago is amazing for astrophysics :frowning: Really wanted to get accepted, but got waitlisted. ), and all the best to everyone else too!
After a EA deferral by Harvard, a rejection by MIT and Caltech, and now a waitlist by UChicago, I really don’t know what to expect from Ivy Day, but there’s no harm in hoping.
By the way, I am an international applicant from India.

@GraceDad What I’ve read is that the huge waitlist is needed because UChicago and other top schools have an abundance of qualified candidates. So many, that their acceptances are given not only on ability to do the work at Chicago, but also to “craft the class” that will create an optimal learning environment. Given that objective, if they wanted trumpet players and an accepted trumpet player declines the offer, they need a large enough waitlist that they can be somewhat confident another trumpet player is available.

In that case, here’s hoping that all their accepted bass players decide to go to Harvard instead.

Does Chicago need any accordion players?

@GraceDad It’s hard to see how they could “craft the class” without one.

I think everyone realizes that accordion players are vastly underrepresented on most college campuses today. Accordion players unite!!!

hey guys! any other deferred EA, then waitlisted RD applicants here? it’s a sad life.

In the email/letter of continued interest, do you guys think it’s worth mentioning that I had put UChicago as my number 1 choice on my National Merit application? Or is it just a reminder that UChicago may have to grant me $4000/yr in scholarships?

@Willows I did that in my letter that I sent after I got deferred, but I don’t know if it’s a good thing or a bad thing to include.
