It's that time of year again for transfer applications.

Is anyone else applying to Penn as a transfer?

I'm applying to SEAS from a public state school.

It's that time of year again for transfer applications.

Is anyone else applying to Penn as a transfer?

I'm applying to SEAS from a public state school.

I’m applying as a transfer!

I’ve been in community college for 5 semesters (2.5 years) and I am currently enrolled at the University of Delaware. I’m thinking of transferring either this year or for 2014.

I’m applying to the Wharton School

As I understand, their policy for transfer students is very rigid. They really expect that all prospective transfer students apply to be a sophomore or a junior, and that their decision on admission is based on the number of semesters that a student has been enrolled in another university. I doubt that my application to Penn will pan out to anything. And realistically, I’m really liking the school that I’m going to now. In addition, I know that all prospective transfer students need to have fulfilled requirements to apply as a respective sophomore or junior.

Here is just a preliminary resume.

Community College:
Multiple inductee into the Dean’s List, Vice President of Fellowship with the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, organizer of the Community College Completion Corps (C4) Project, member of the Kappa Beta Delta Honor Society, student tutor in mathematics and economics, student ambassador, cellist of 7 years, Junior manager at Wegmans Food Stores for 4.5 years.

I’m just starting at UDel, so I have no resume for that university yet.

What school are you coming from?

I currently attend the University of Maryland, College Park. I am a freshman, and I’m currently in my second semester of college. I am applying to SEAS as a sophomore.

About me: I really like Penn’s atmosphere of getting involved and its culture of creation. At Maryland, I’ve taken advantage of the opportunities that are available. I currently work as a Java Developer for the University Libraries. I code the website (some of the features I made are on the home page, which is really exciting.) I’ve also recently started a programming job at Lockheed Martin.

I’m looking to transfer because I do not like the atmosphere of Maryland’s engineering program. Because many students are unmotivated, group projects become a drag, and it’s not really the kind of environment in which I can enjoy the collaboration I think is important to the field of engineering. As a large state school, it’s also very impersonal; registering for classes is a warzone and 300-student lectures are common.

Transfer guy, reporting in.

Currently a GWU student. Admittedly for my field GW is pretty good, but the research opportunities at Penn are amazing and you get more of an opportunity to work with faculty IMO (The kind of work I do with faculty entails interrogating them about what they’re currently working on)

A bit about me: Do a lot with college taekwondo club, Parliamentary Debate, Secular Society, and won an Outstanding Delegation distinction at the Capitol Area Model Arab League Conference, also got a chance to work with the National Council on US-Arab Relations.

Nerd Stuff Stats:
HS GPA: ~3.83
ACT: 31 Composite
Current College GPA: 3.6 (Got a B in Econ because my professor barely spoke English T_T)

AP English Lit 2012, 5
AP Psychology 2010, 5

Other stuffs:
Worked at the law firm where my mother works for a while
Taught martial arts since I was 15 or so
Started the group that studied for the AP Euro in high school, part of the school’s first AP Psych group (Can’t put it on the app though because it was tenth grade)

Yay transferring!

I am currently a freshman at Brandeis University. I am now in my second semester of college and can’t wait to apply for transfer to Penn.

About me: I was elected to Student Government (Senator), elected as Treasurer of the Tennis Club, am a contributing writer to the newspaper, and on the JV side of the Debate Team here, which is ranked #2 in the country! I also interned for a local Mayor for 3 years and for a State Senator. I’m on Dean’s List etc.

For the letters of recommendation, did any of you guys have a TA write one of them?

I had professors write them. I think TAs can do it too, though.

Good luck everyone, remember to share your results once you get them!

Thanks! Gonna need it. T_T

For the midterm report, apparently they only want it for prospective sophomores only?

See the last question:[Penn Admissions](Prepare For Transfer Admission | Penn Admissions)

So if we’re prospective junior transfers, should we still submit it?

Hmm, interesting question. I’d say call the Penn Admissions office. They’re a helpful bunch.

Hi everybody,

Do you think it is possible to be regarded as a sophomore even though you are applying during your second year (to start as a junior)?

Thanks!

^Do you mean you think you will have so few credits that you will enter as a sophomore?

Hey, I also go to the University of Maryland, College Park and the problems that I have with that school are pretty much the same as Justin’s. Quick question, does anyone know if I would have less of a chance of being admitted if I applied as a double major?

Not sure exactly how you would indicate that you were a double major. Either way, I can’t think of a reason why your chances would decrease if you were able to do that.

I have enough credits, but I don’t have the majority of the prereqs for the junior transfer (some of them are not offered at my school)… It is a community college, and courses like calculus-based statistics and intermediate econ are not offered here

I am a little frustrated with the different answers I’m getting about the Instructor Recommendation requirements. The Transfer FAQ says it is completely fine to have a TA help me write a recommendation (as long as the professor signs off on it), yet the admissions representative I spoke to said that is not ok and that both recommendations HAVE to be written by professors. I have contacted regional directors and each has given me different answers as well. Anyone have any suggestions on how to solve this dilemma?

I mean I could have a professor write it, but almost all of my classes are huge introductory courses or lectures, so it’s pretty rare that we even get to know our professors intimately. Even the professors encouraged me to ask my TA instead, after I asked them to help me write one (alot of them are too busy apparently). I have cultivated a very good relationship with this TA and I think she can write a solid recommendation on my behalf

Realistically, I cannot imagine Penn being able to make the distinction between the two as long as the Professor filled out the relevant contact information. Perhaps sketchy as far as the rules are concerned, but I cannot imagine a professor would be unwilling to sign off on a good letter of recommendation from a TA. Admissions may tell you they need to be a certain way, but they’d have a very difficult time knowing that the letter was not from the professor.

Hi PennTSO!

Do you recommend applicants hoping to enter as juniors send a midterm report? Online it says its only required for prospective sophomore-entering applicants.
