Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): I guess none.

Reflection

Strengths:My GPA is really good, at least in my country, my course load was hard enough focused on tech, Myspace was AMAZING everyone loved what I did, L-O-V-E-D, Im very well rounded, perhaps not the typicall student since most of my ECs were out of school (in here schools lack of ecs) but they are UNIQUE ECs, my essay was really good

Weaknesses: Low SAT, Financial Aid

Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Because of FinAid, I needed almost full ride.

Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Rejected: Wesleyan, U of Chicago, Bryn Mawr, Vassar, Vanderbilt
No waitlists yet. One acceptance

General Comments:
600 out of a pool of 8000! the competition was hard this year, besides needing almost full financial aid lowered my chances. Im hurted because I really like Vassar as in REALLY like it, but I guess Universe dont want me there so…whatever, I have to move on. So sad, this is my first hearbreak lol.

@GarfieldGirl, thanks. You were right, he made it to colgate.

**Decision: Rejected **

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): N/A
[] ACT: 33 (35 E, 35 S, 33 R, 27 M)
[] SAT II: N/A
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.86
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10%
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Lit, AP Psych, AP Stat, AP Spanish, Advanced Physics, Advanced Choir
[] Major/Semi-Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): AP Scholar, MD Distinguished Scholar, First Place in State for Improvisational Acting, Science Fair Regional Winner
[/ul][ b]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Glee Club (Founder/President), Theatre Critics (President), Jewish Student Union (President), National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, Science National Honor Society (Treasurer), Student Leadership Group, Improv, Madrigals, Choir, Tae Kwon Do (Black Belt/Class Leader), Theatre Productions (Both in and outside of HS–over 15 productions throughout HS along with 2 TV credits), Internship w/ Award-Winning Regional Actor, International Thespian Society, Voice Lessons, Music Related (I taught/am teaching myself guitar, bass, and ukelele and have done quite a bit of composing and recording)
[] Job/Work Experience: Tutor/Aide at Sunday School
[] Volunteer/Community service: Tutor at local homeless shelter, tutor at local elementary school, volunteer in children’s wing of library, companion at senior living home, freelance college prep specialist (I spent years researching colleges and know many good sources for college search, so I volunteer to help other students through the college search process)
[] Summer Activities: Theatre Productions mainly. Also went to UNC CH Vocal Music Program.
[] Essays: Common App essays were very, very strong. Vassar supplemental essay is most likely why I was rejected. Didn’t do any of the optional essays and my supplemental essay was not particularly great.
[] Teacher Recommendation: Very good. Both teachers knew me really well and taught subjects of interest (English and Bio). I did really well in both classes and, though I waived my right to view my recs, I feel that they were probably stellar.
[] Counselor Rec: Probably pretty generic. Each counselor at my school writes recs for about 40-50 kids
[] Additional Rec: From HS Principal, whom I’ve known for almost 10 years and advises the leadership group I’m in.
[] Interview: Didn’t request one, but was contacted by an alum anyway. Interview went extremely well. Interviewer said I seemed very unique, asked interesting/non-generic questions, and would be a great fit for Vassar.
[/ul][ b]Other
[ul]

[] State (if domestic applicant): MD
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: Med. Public–Extremely competitive, one of the best in the state. Usually have between 30-50 students accepted to top 25 schools.
[] Ethnicity: Didn’t report, but white.
[] Gender: Female
[]Income Bracket: $80,000
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None[/li][/ul][ b]Reflection**[ul]

[] Strengths: ECs, GPA, Test Score, Recommendations, Interview, Common App Essay
[] Weaknesses: Rank, Vassar Supplement
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: It probably seemed like I wasn’t really interested in Vassar. I never had the chance to visit, and I didn’t do any supplemental essays. My Vassar supplement was OK but not very fantastic. Even though I showed passion in my interview, I’ve heard that those don’t really count for anything at Vassar.
[] Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted to UMN Honors, Rochester, and UMD Honors w/ scholarships to all. Also accepted to Northwestern. Vassar was my first rejection. Still waiting on 8 schools.
[/ul]General Comments: Honestly, I would be more disheartened if I hadn’t been accepted to Northwestern the day before. Even if accepted, would have chosen NU over Vassar. Guess it’s good so now someone who’ll actually go there can take my spot. Congrats to all that got in, and to those who didn’t, don’t worry: many decisions are yet to come, and I’m sure you’ll get into a school that’s great for you.

[] Weaknesses: I didn’t take all the AP classes offered at my school.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: I’m a well-rounded individual who will be a lovely addition to any college campus. (I think the clever photograph of me playing ukulele and serenading a stuffed penguin also played a major role.)

[] Counselor Rec: Should be good, I dunno.
[] Additional Rec: Meh

Volunteer/Community service: +150 hours in Ecuador for environmental cleanup.
Summer Activities: No “summer” activities in particular besides volunteering
Essays: I don’t know how good they are, but I think did it really well. I didn’t get anyone to look over them. I made it interesting by piecing together the typical stereotypes of a Vassar student and how i would proud to be one.
Teacher Recommendation: Pretty good. I didn’t see it, but all the teachers were close to me.
Counselor Rec: Pretty good, my counselor really cared about what I did and was really enthusiastic about where I’ll be going.

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First gen.

Reflection:

Strengths: ECs, Maybe GPA, but I really did something unique on my application profile.
Weaknesses: SATs of course.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: GPA, academic, courses and ECs
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Accepted Northeastern,Binghamton,Stony Brook,Northeastern,Boston University, wait-listed at Boston college and Wesleyan, Rejected by Columbia. Waiting for Bard, Cornell, Brown, Dartmouth.

General Comments:
I checked Wesleyan first and seeing that I got wait-listed I was certain that I would get rejected from Vassar. But surprisingly, in the turn of a miraculous event, I got accepted. I checked the stats and I realized I fell in the low 9% ~ 20% who got in with similar stats. It was certainly a reach for me(seriously, a 610 verbal and 670 writing) and I really didn’t expect an acceptance letter. I was so sure of this that I sort of BSed the whole application with a joking essay about hipsters and a picture of myself with an obnoxious message written on it. I guess the quirkiness really worked. I really was shocked and surprised that I got accepted. For those of you who read this, see the stats and don’t be disappointed-- colleges really has every reason for what they did and after this I became convinced that SATs and GPAs aren’t heaviest weight in an application. Have hope guys! and good luck to all the future applicants!
