I understand your point but that is not the way I read the NCAA rules. To me, the keys in your referrence are that the REPRESENTATIVE can not “provide”, “initiate” or “arrange”… All are allowed by the athlete.

Loop hole? Probably.

Loop hole? Probably.

You are debating the same things I have wondered…and asked…

How can a kid commit IF there isn’t supposed to be all of this contact–?? WHat does a coach see in order to ask a scholar-athlete to commit to coming to their college-team.

I know of a student who talked with a college coach at the hs campus and at a competition—
this is a D1 coach–
and that same coach/school then sent a written offer of an official visit for the fall…

all before July 1…

And I have wondered
how a guy can commit to Stanford for baseball in his jr yr…
…or a girl to Princeton for soccer her Jr yr…
All I can gather is these are THE top athletes and schools/coaches want to be at the front of the line when the p[hone starts ringing at 8am July 1.

So anyone know of booked officials…which sports/genders??

PTmajor - how can an athlete arrange an official visit?

It can only be official if offered by the coach.

They were offered by the coach while we were on unoffial visits during junior year. The officials are scheduled for fall of senior year.

Different sports must have different rules - for Lacrosse the date for coaches to contact recruits seems to be Sept 1 of their Junior year.

From Laxlessons.com

Dated September 1, 2009 -

“Today was the first day Division I college coaches could contact high school juniors, and it didn’t take long to see who the most prized recruit in the region is.” …

“With the day now almost over, I just touched base with Mike. Here’s what’s cooking.
First off, he’s heard from virtually every coach at all levels of Division I competition.”…

““As of now I have gotten e-mails from over 30 D-I programs,” he said at 10:15 p.m.”

The top recruits start committing almost immediately.

I just got word from 2 different parents
–one of a boy and one of a girl
…both offered officals (via email–and for a non revenue sport) links to online apps and instructions were attached.

Seems things may be heating up–
While maybe sports dependent–it seems to vary also by gender.

Anyone have news to report – ?

We are hearing from coaches who say they will be calling next week–so I gather that mid August is not too late to hear about OV dates. One coach from one of kiddos top choice schools has offered our kiddo a Sept date so kiddo is pleased with that.

The contact dates are when coaches can practively contact recruits. Before those dates in most situations the coaches can respond to communications initiated by a recruit. In addtion, tons of recruits “commit” before the dates coaches can proactively contact them … that said, nothing is binding (for D1 and D2 recruits) until LOI are signed which can not happen until after the dates coaches can proactively contact recruits.

Two college coaches flew into watch and evalaute a very talented left-handed pitcher this sumer. (teammate of my kid’s) The kid had finished eighth grade, but had not yet started high school. They loved the kid, told him so and told him that they would be offering him as spot as soon as they were allowed. They told him that they would not be able to intitiate contact with him until after his sophomore baseball season is over. This is a Div 1 school in CA.

I didn’t know this was allowed, but the coaches seemed to know what they were doing.

One interesting twist is the coaching changes from school to school

kiddo got an email from one coach moving to another school…never to be heard from again
and
gto another emial from a coach who had left another univer who is now recruiting kiddo for a different univ.

I think alot of OVs for the first round in Sept have been issued…

Anyone hear anything else?

@Fogfog: When is the second round for OVs for D1 schools? Is October/November already too late? (My OV is late October…)

^
I am sure this is sport specific…so not sure. I would guess anything in the fall is early so that apps can be done for EA etc.

Has anyone committed yet?
We know of one scholar-athlete who has verballed to the first OV–we all knew it was going to happen–though this athlete has done another OV since and will do one more…Not sure why since this athlete verballed and is IN…
Perhaps the students just like the courting ?

Some sport specific information. I know of one female golfer who has 2 official visits lined up for the next few weeks. One of her teammates has already committed to a team.

My d went for an unofficiall visit (spent 3 days) we went with her. At the end of the visit we met with the coach. Coach offered her a spot and said there would be an atheletic scholarship tied to it, but didn’t want to give us a percentage untill she asked another player if she is going to committ or not. If player doesnt she will add that player to ours. We all agreed we would go home and think about the school before my daughter would committ. Coach said she would get back to us. It is going on two weeks the team is traveling right now does any one had this experience and how long does it take for coach to get back

Unfortunately, the answer you have already been given elsewhere on CC to this question is the true one. Coaches do not generally wait 2 weeks in October to nail down those recruits that they want. Your daughter needs to contact the coach, phone/e-mail, ASAP and find out what the story is. If you read the various threads on athletic forum (and our experience confirms this), interested coaches answer emails quite quickly (i.e. same day). Silence usually means they’ve moved on (as we also discovered) and are no longer interested. You don’t always even get the courtesy of ‘gee, we’ve moved on. good luck to you’ e-mail. DS was asked for a verbal commit, which he gave, and then the coach disappeared after that. Coach found someone he liked better. Fortunately, DS had other options and is quite happy where he is.

Also, if it makes you feel any better, the chances are that ‘scholarship’ your daughter would have been given would likely have been small, especially as a freshman. I’ve heard of kids being awarded $100 as an ‘athletic scholarship.’
