Are you (or is your student) being offered officals yet?

Know there are a few here who have student's lining up officals--

Wondering which sports.... and if both boys and girls... are already getting invites to officials before July 1.

Put this same question in the Parent threads…

fogfog - you already know this, but I will try to bump this for you! Yes, two written formal Official Visit invitations received about a month ago from 2 Div. 1 universities, top tier in this sport. Dates have been selected. Lots of verbal references to forthcoming Official Visit invitations from others. For crew, for a girl.

I thought this couldn’t happen until July 1?

Coaches can’t initiate phone contact prior to 7/1. Written correspondence is ok. Don’t panic if you’re not getting any official offers yet. Last summer was a lot of casual, but regular phone and email contact with coaches. A couple of coaches during the summer said, ‘save one of your officials for us’. It ramped up a lot in Sept. and Oct…be patient, it’s a marathon.

^^womens track

^^^Love the marathon reference - so true - but particularly loved it for womens track  I have been thinking of it as an odyssey - a long, interesting journey with unexpected surprises and paths being presented, all to a as-yet-unknown destination…This summer will no doubt be really telling for all of us on this forum going through this experience. Good luck to everyone!!

Interesting article. The 2010 recruiting class for schools mentioned is a also heavy on Jr National team members.

Wow - that link answered some pertinent issues that I have been curious about, so thank you for posting that fogfog! Really interesting. I wonder, if you are coaching your potential recruit during the day, then do you make a separate “recruiting coach” weekly phone call to them in the evening, even though you are minutes away and are with them all day, since you obviously can’t speak about that during the Jr. National Team camps training time? Seems comical, but necessary. I look forward to learning about that…!

Some coaches my daughter had contacted by phone, met with at length, and knew very well prior to July 1st warned her that they would be seeing her at post-season events in June, and would only be able to smile and wave.

The article was interesting.

I think any kids who are competiting for any national teams in any sports–should not be “fair” game for the coaches -which if they are college coaches–Clearly have a conflict of interest.

Why are other college coaches being told they have to wait until July 1–and the college coaches at the national camps allowed 24/hr access…

It was in interesting read for sure…wonder how it fits for all of the other sports

I think that if you are already that good at your sport, for this instance rowing, then it is fair game. I would imagine that those athletes are already being heavily recruited by those coaches. Also something to think about is how this could negatively effect those athletes and those coaches. The coach may not like the athlete when he/she arrives at camp, and the athlete might not like the coach and the way they act when they are not putting on a front for recruits.

We have just finished a week of college re-visits and coach visits. We are now done visiting every school that my child has been communicating with regularly, and which are schools that she is truly very interested in attending. Out of the 7 schools we have visited, she now has 6 Official Visit invitations, and 1 school saying they intend to offer her an Official Visit invitation but need to see her SAT II scores first. Now, she is in the stage of narrowing down her top choices, and considering all of her options at this time. I am amazed that there is much activity before July 1st. Is anyone else experiencing this, or had this same experience? Any insight?

Congratulations! Your daughter will have some tough choices to make. And I am pretty sure only the very top recruits are getting the kind of attention that your daughter is getting. The rest are waiting to hear from coaches later on in the summer. My daughter has received one invitation, pending end of year materials. Unfortunately it is not from a school she is very interested in attending, too small. She has gotten several additional requests for her end of year transcript, senior class schedule and test scores in anticipation of fall visits. And she has set up a couple of meetings with coaches for July, but that is about it.

frosty6 ^^^ Very good point. It all goes both ways.

fishymom: Thank you - exciting but it all just seems much earlier and quicker than expected. A bit overwhelming, and there aren’t even phone calls yet. I hope this is a fun memory though…can’t say how it will all end, of course. It sounds as if your daughter will have a good fall :)

Congrats Mayhew on everything going so well–
Nice that she has to narrow down 6 to 5–What a blessing to have an abundance of choices!

Looking forward to hearing how it all works out! ;o)

On the issue re national coaches vs other college coaches–I guess my point is it is a disadvantage for other colleges–when certain coaches have 24/7 contact with a kid…then again- it is harder to “keep up a front” for so long–weeks and qeeks–so the student gets to see hwat the coach really is like under pressure…

fogfog, I agree with your comment that lots of contact before commitment can cut both ways. Some coaches who looked good on the first pass didn’t look like a good match under the scrutiny possible during camps and longer visits. Just keep gathering information. It’s so tempting to try to narrow things down early, but sometimes a later entrant to the picture is the right choice.

Hello! I was offered an official visit just a couple of days ago. The coach didn’t ask for anything really…just wondering if I was going to retake my SAT (I suppose it’s pretty low, considering he was asking that!).
Just want to say thanks to all the parents/athletes on this forum for their guidance. I didn’t sound like a fool when I was talking to the coach! Whew! :)

mayhew post #14:
My daughter is in the same spot as your child for this recruiting process (except she’s only up to 4 officials to date and 1 coach that claims she’ll have an official offer in time). While its been very exciting for the whole family, I’ve personally found it a bit nerve wracking as I skim CC for others experiences.

This is my first time going through this process. My daughter I’m referring to is my eldest child and I personally was not an athlete so as I read posts from others (not necessarily in this thread), it makes me question whether any or all of these coaches will actually maintain the same level of interest they’ve shown thus far. Obviously, only time will tell… but I’m so nervous for her.

If there’s anyone out there who’s gone through a similar process (particularly DII and DIII), please chime in to let me know what to expect as the next-step following official visits. How long does it take to get an official offer? If you’ve experienced a coach who lost interest after official visits, please share how that message is delivered. Any input is greatly appreciated.
