Oh white doesn’t count as ORM?
So it’s like:
ORM-Asian-negative
White-neutral
URM-black, native american, hispanic

Well, by definition, white’s are not minorities in the US.

Being White certainly isn’t as “negative” as being Asian, but it also does hurt if competing with URMs.

Being white isn’t NEGATIVE. Being URM gives you an advantage, and being an ORM gives you a disadvantage. Being white puts you in the middle.

I wouldn’t say that white applicants are “hurt” in the admissions; rather, it is the URM’s that “gets” the edge. ORM’s are the ones that get “hurt.”

^Yes I agree.

I was simply saying that when competing with others who have an “edge,” it can be seen as a negative. This isn’t meant to spark debate, we do after all agree with the ORM, neutral, URM ranking; I just feel it depends on your interpretation of what “negative” and “neutral” mean.

A quick Wikipedia check said Whites are about 74.8% of America’s population, so they’re technically under-represented, at least at Yale.

@Owlehn.

The majority of the applicants are either on the same place as you, or even more disadvantaged. White applicants with no hooks are generally considered “neutral.”

URM’s and legacies get the advantage and ORMs get the disadvantage.

i have said this a lot.

The 74.8% white is including Hispanic. Of the 229.8 million that comprises the 74.8% “30.4 million are White Hispanic and Latino Americans. Excluding these, this category comprises 65.0% or 199.3 million”
