[li] ** Essays:
I liked it, but apparently it didn't fit their tastes. Also mailed in a supplementary essay.[/li][li] Teacher Recs: ** One was very good, one must have very good because she loves me.[/li][li] *Counselor Rec: * I didn't read it, but it was probably pretty unexceptional and standard. Each counselor has hundreds of students to take care of and probably up to 100 senior college recs to write. I know him pretty well, though, and he should have good things to say about me.[/li][li] *ECs listed on app: *[/li]Piano (10 years)
Varsity Swimming (3 years)
French Club President and VP
DECA Treasurer
School Newspaper copy editor and reporter
National Honor Society peer tutor
Volunteering at local library
Progressive Youth of America (political awareness group)

Location/Person:[ul]
[li] ** State or Country:
Washington[/li][li] School Type: Large suburban public, 1800+[/li][li] Ethnicity: Chinese[/li][li] Gender: ** Female[/li][/ul]Other Factors:** Strong test scores and academic record and courseload all through high school. Weaknesses could be not enough sparkle and leadership in ECs, few high-level awards. And probably my essays did not stand out enough.
General Comments: Congrats to those admitted, and for those who didn't get in, prestige isn't all that matters and I'm sure you'll be
happy wherever you end up! Besides, wouldn't you rather go to a school that truly appreciates and values you for who you are?
Remember, :D ** Individuals determine destinies, not institutes. ** :D
It's been quite a ride, and I've enjoyed it with all of you!

Stanford, I think, but its going to depend on aid. I got full merit from vandy and about 1/2 off rice, so I'm trying to decide if paying full ticket price for stanford or harvard is worth the difference. All else being equal, I would probably pick stanford (I know, I'm a dirty west coaster).

Stats:
SAT I (by section):760 verbal, 700 math, 730 writing (2150. eek!)
SAT IIs: 730 US History, 730 literature, 760 math II c
ACT: 33 (34 english, 35 reading, 33 math, 29 science (ouch))
APs:5 Euro, 5Art History, 4 US History, 4 Calculus
IBs: n/a
GPA, Weighted and Unweighted: 4.0 UW, 4.35 W
Rank: 2/324
Senior Yr Courseload:AP Economics, government, Latin VI independent study, Calculus III at a local college, choir, AP Biology, AP Lit and Comp
Number of Apps from Your School: 7 (or more...not sure?)
Other stats: Studied Latin III independently, did honors physics .

Subjective:
ECs listed on app: president/secretary of our state Junior Classical League organization (around 800 students) and founded a Latin club at our school this year. My main responsibility as president was organizing a three day convention for 400 students. Other than that, I was editor of our school paper, on the executive board for national honor society, was a section leader in choir, take piano and voice lessons, and had leads in our school musicals.
Job/Work Experience: Lifeguard/swim lesson instructor; 40 hours during summers
Essays (subject and responses): one was on my latin obsession (how even though its dead its still worthwhile and then examples as to how it has changed my life), and then the other compared my 74 year old piano teacher to my 4 year old sister.
Teacher Recs: Another plus. I cried when I read the rec from my Latin teacher. The other was from my sophomore AP Euro teacher, which was also very complimentary.
Counselor Rec: I had my principal write it, and it was glowing. I think this helped, b/c there were several applicants who applied from my school, and their recommendations were just written by counselors. I didn't have him write this for my princeton app (nor did I apply to princeton EA, nor did I submit my voice tape) and I was waitlisted at Princeton. I'm thinking those factors had something to do with it...for what its worth.
Interview (feel and general location): Went well. Nothing smashing.

Location/Person:
Optional Essay Submitted? Yeppers
State or Country: WI
School Type, Average Stats of School: Suburban, public school. We are pretty respected in the area
Ethnicity: white
Income Bracket: Middle
Gender: Female
Hooks: Latin???? Not quite sure.
Strengths/Weaknesses: Extracurriculars/maybe test scores?
Why you think you were accepted/wait listed/denied:

Probably a few reasons...first of all, I've been told that ad comms look for leadership and passion; between my essays, my extra curriculars, the independent study I did two summers with my Latin teacher, her recommendation, and the awards I had gotten on Latin tests, it was pretty obvious I was a wannabe Roman. Besides that...I'm not really sure. My teacher recommendations were definitely solid, as well.

Other Factors:I was deferred EA.
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc:

I was also accepted to Marquette, UW-Madison, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Yale, and then waitlisted at Princeton.

I'm actually still in shock, because I had solid plans to attend UW-Madison next year, and was really excited about being a Badger (I would say, "I'm 99% positive I'm going to Madison...with the 1% being the chance that I get into another school and can also afford it). I wouldn't even let myself go the Yale website because I didn't want to think going there was an option, and even if I got in, I was positive my family couldn't afford it. I really encourage those looking at the selective colleges to love your safety school...because then when you are accepted to one of the more selective colleges, its even more exciting... but more importantly, if you are not accepted to your dream school, you already have a solid plan for your education. That was definitely the best thing I learned about the admissions process. Have a school you know you can get into and afford, and will be happy attending. It made the whole process a lot less stressful for me, because I could definitely have been attending UW-Madison this fall.

[] Other stats: Research awards, including national finalist @ Siemens and top 10 @ Intel STS
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] ECs listed on app: Astronomy research, Science Olympiad, ass't. editor of school paper news section, track
[] Job/Work Experience: Paid research this past summer :)
[] Essays (subject and responses): Pretty good. The Common App one was about how I discovered astronomy and how I came to love it, and how that passion has developed over the years. The one that's been getting all sorts of critical raves demonstrated my passion for astronomy and my reasons for applying to Yale by comparing astronomy to sex, and oh boy, there was a lot to write about :p
[] Teacher Recs: I would imagine they were as good as I could have wanted, but I didn't see them (though I heard about them). One was from my science research teacher, one from my English teacher, and one was from my research mentor. The people I picked really like me, so...
[] Counselor Rec: Same.
[] Interview (feel and general location): None (applied RD).
[/ul]Location/Person:[ul]
[] Optional Essay Submitted? Indeedy!
[] State or Country: NY (Long Island)
[] School Type, Average Stats of School: Competitive public, only sends a few kids to Ivies per year, although we're having a damned good year this year. No HYP in at least three years although this year it looks like we're getting a kid to all three!
[] Ethnicity: White/Jewish
[] Income Bracket: Upper-middle?
[] Gender: Male
[] Hooks: Research. I definitely demonstrated my passion for astronomy, and backed it up with demonstrated success in research that's going to really impact the field.
[] Strengths/Weaknesses: Strengths were, again, the research and the awards from Intel and Siemens, along with two essays about astronomy, one which had a very healthy dose of my personality and humor. Great recommendations. Weaknesses were relatively low class rank and possibly a lack of "well-roundedness" (a fear that might have been alleviated by my class choices and some of my ECs, but I'm certainly not as crazy well-rounded as most of the people here!!)
[li] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/denied:[/li][/ul]Other Factors: Likely letter, so the official decision wasn't much of a shock, hence the delay in posting here!
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations,etc: See you all at Bulldog Days, and it looks like Yale is winning out over MIT and Caltech, so quite possibly see you all next year too!!

APFreak--Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!! See, you don't need Harvard ;) So what's the plan for next year?

hey GuitarMan, the Harvard adcoms must have been out of their minds, but the Yale adcoms had the right idea :) Glad to see another hardcore science geek coming to Yale. Just curious, what made u decide Yale over Caltech with Axline? See u at Bulldog Days man.

props to guitarman , am i missing something or do i see he's not in the top 5 percent of a public school that sends few kids to ivies, why are people surprised he didn't get into harvard

umm, he was #3 at Siemens and top 10 in Intel STS, the largest and most prestigious precollegiate research competitions, making him arguably one of the top science students in the nation.

well as you can c ec's dont matter as much we all think. For reliable evidence look at the stats of accepts for HYP. Quickly scan through, excluding URM's. The vast majority are 2230+ with 1-5 rank. WITHIN Those stats ec's will make a difference, but not for students who don't qualify for that.
