We have a decision to make in the next few weeks. Our son has been admitted to OSU and UK biology honors programs. His goal is to go into medicine. We live in Cincinnati and he wanted to stay within driving distance.

On paper, both are pretty comparable. Both are public, large, equidistant from home, have good biology programs and have medical schools. The main difference is the cost of attendance. We pay in-state fees for OSU, which is about 25K per year. Although UK is out of state, he got Patterson Scholarship which is full ride including room and board.

He likes OSU better than UK, partly because OSU is higher ranked in pretty much every category than UK. But, I am having a hard time ignoring the $100K difference. OSU is probably a better school, but is it that better? My understanding us that the Undegrad school is of very little importance in the process of medical education, as long as you go to a decent school and work hard.

The kicker is, we can afford the $100K without much difficulty and that makes the decision harder for me. Logic says to save that money and put it towards his med school, but there is an element of guilt in not sending him to where he wants even though we can afford it.

Any thoughts?
