Ok, I need some ACT encouragement

I got my ACT score back today and I need to raise it about 4-5 points by October. Has anybody increased their score by this much? If yes, what did you do to prep?!

Go get 'em, tiger!! You can do it!

Oh wait, there was a real question involved...

Depends on what your score is, and how much you're willing to dedicate time to it. It's much easier to improve from 25 to 30 than 30 to 35. I can't help you much (my composite remained the same), but I'm sure plenty of people on CC can help you out... prep books... especially relaxing before the test can help.. don't stress out.
Good luck..

I got a 26 (I got high scores on everything but science which really dragged me down) and I want to raise it to like a 29-32. possible?

definitely...
do a few practice tests to make sure your timing is alright (usually the problem with the science section) or whatever you feel is a weakness, and make sure you won't slip in any of the other subjects.
i didn't improve much, but i only reviewed two science practice tests, which pulled my 29 to a 31.. although that's not much, with more time on your hands, you'll probably be able to pull up your score.. don't burn yourself out on it though.. there's not much to learn for the science section; just be familiar with it more.
definitely relax- i had met some really cool people at the act site at the last retake and had fun.

YES! I think the Science section is actually the easiest one in which to raise your score. I suggest that you practice a lot! At some point, the science section should “click” for you, at which point you should be able to do great. It IS possible to drastically improve your scores; good luck in your efforts.

Thanks everyone!

I have a 26, but it was the English/ grammar section that nailed me. I swear I thought that was the best section I did. Now I have to start doing the practice tests.
So bsaically we have the same goal, with different issues.

What score are you aiming for TonyLTH12? I didn't really do any prep so I think that will help. The science was just frustrating because you have so little time.

I like 30 or anything above that.
I didn't prep here either becuase of finals (who doesnt).
Hopefully you didn't do what I did: read the labs and its background... I realized that you don't need to until I was 3/4s done.
Too bad the essay was not on the score because i really liked the topic.

I wasn't really sure what the best way was to do the science section. Did you just go straight to the questions and then look at the charts?

My highest science ever is 5 points above what it was when i first took the test. Buy a prep book and work through the practice tests, because this will help you get a sense of pacing. On the test day, be relaxed and confident. Also, there's usually no reason to read the passages (unless it's like scientist 1 vs. scientist 2), so just go straight to the questions.

OMG YES U CAN DO IT ... i took a one week class on the ACT at my school and I raised my overall composite 4 points! My math went up 4, my reading went up 6, my science went up 5, my enlgish dind't do aynthing but that's okay.. i went from .. well acutally i went up 5 points cause the first time i got a 28 and then most recently i got a 33, so it's very realistic

That's very encouraging collegebound! I have a long time to study so I'm feeling pretty confident now.

Yea i would just say to get ur hands on some practice tests and do them constantly! That's what I did and look what happened@

ACT scores are random and inconsistant in my opinion. A lot of luck involved.

First practice = 34
Second practice = 28
Third Practice = 31
Fourth = 29

Real test = 33

Should my score be fluctuating this much? Is that normal?

Hm.... i don't hitnk so because before my test, my composites were around 32-34 and i got right inthe middle!

What prepbooks did you guys use? I have ARCO's ACT book and the science section is hard!!. Surprised that the curve is cruel as well.

I also found that my scores fluctuated a lot. I first took it when I was a freshman and then took my soph. year and twice as a junior. I didn't do any prep at all except I studied a lot for the SAT math which in turn probably helped my ACT math. I also did like 2 science practice tests before the last time I took it. Anyway...my composite scores (in chronological order) are: 33, 31, 32, and 35.
