Ok to Write About Politics in Common App Essay for Prospective OR/Finance major?

I want to write my common app essay on why I like following political and economic news. I realize that politics is considered a controversial subject, but I'm trying to be as non-partisan as possible and avoid revealing my political beliefs.

Is it OK to write about my I like politics if I'm applying to study operations research or finance at colleges?

"Is it OK to write about my I like politics if I’m applying to study operations research or finance at colleges? "

Yes.

Make sure you write about something you have done with politics or why it affects you so much in order for the admissions officers to get to know you and see what you are about.

^ Because your interest in following political news matters less than what you did to get involved- or how this awareness got you engaged in a relevant way. They’re trying to glean what sort of kid you are. Really a case of “show, not tell.”

So what if I haven’t gotten involved politically? I enjoy following politics because I like expanding my knowledge and engaging in political arguments. In my essay, I demonstrate how my love or apprehension of politics has shaped myself and my goals. Would it be a bad idea to keep this topic if I don’t have any politics EC’s?

i don’t agree with everything previous comments said. if you like something really much, then you will probably write very well and interestingly on it. Although it does help if you have a background on that area, it should never prevent you from writing it. i’m wrote my main essay on history, and i’m majoring in engineering. And I love my essay.

OP. for the schools I think you’re interested in, it helps to do more than just describe an interest- eg, “following the news.” So, make it an engaging essay, include something about those heated discussions, give it some life- maybe even have fun with it. If you can include “show not tell,” I think you’re fine. Good luck.

“Would it be a bad idea to keep this topic if I don’t have any politics EC’s?”

You’re fine. Not all of your passions have to manifest themselves in external, independent actions. So long as you make it clear that your internalizing the information in a meaningful way, there’s no issue.

Thanks for the help. BTW, would any of you be willing to read one of my essays? I wrote for a different app and I want to see if its too cliche.
