What does it mean to be "Well rounded"? Like you are good at everything? Wouldn't that be too "broad"?

What does it mean to be "Well rounded"? Like you are good at everything? Wouldn't that be too "broad"?

Help!! thx XD

My friend who is a guidance counselor at an elite prep school told me a long time ago that top colleges are not looking for well rounded individuals but well rounded classes. This means to excel at one thing is often preferable.

okay, thx revbon50! :)

But another question: excel at something you don’t really like…does it matter?

Also, I was having trouble finding a “passion” since I like “a lot” of things (like, really…XD)

No college, not even the Ivies, expect you to be good at everything.

By well-rounded, they mean firstly: extracurriculars.
ECs not related to academics are best.
Then, maybe a variety of ECs, like playing a sport plus an instrument. Or volunteering plus a sport. Or working part time.

Basically, colleges want to see that you can do more than one thing, not everything.

It’s better to have a focus of a few ECs rather than have a bunch that you don’t really care about. The time you put into your ECs will show whether you actually have an interest in them or not.

Excel at something you like is best, for sure. Why put tons of time into something you don’t even care about? It’s fine to have a variety of interests. You can keep them all, and just focus In one area.

Haha, okay thank you hoopser77 XD

it means besides for being the top of ur class and having a 2300, they want u to be great at a sport, music, or something thats really different…

Remember they are looking for a well-rounded class, each individual may not necessarily be well rounded. But the less well-rounded you are, the more you should bring to the table in whatever your area of expertise (IMO).

Just try really hard to look unique. Somehow showcase that you’re valuable to them.

Let them know why they need you, not the other way around. And of course this is without seeming arrogant.

For some well rounded is as follows: 36-24-36?

Yes top colleges are looking for well rounded classes but that does not mean it excludes well rounded individuals. Sure there are “pointy” folks but I’d say the majority of people I knew at an H peer school were well-rounded.
