Olin chances

What, if any chance do I have to get in at Olin? - I am extremely interested in this school (and will 99% sure go if accepted), but its admission rate is extremely low (I'll apply and see what happens - just wondering what chances I have).

Here's my stats
-4.2 GPA (4.0 unweighted) at a pretty academically diverse private (doesn't rank, but i'm probably about 5/100).
-34 ACT/2300 (mix and match) SAT
-SAT 2's: chem 800, math 1: 770, math 2: 780
-took a couple classes at a decent local university
-Caucasian male
-~300 hrs community service
-junior year ap's: 5 chem, 4 english
-senior year ap's: calc bc, english, bio, physics, econ
-will be NM commended scholar, just missed cutoff for semi-finalist (i think)
EC's:
-Mu alpha theta president
-NHS (running for office)
-church youth group - media team leader
-misc math. competitions: decent scores, usually place, OSU's math dept is trying to recruit me (because of AIME participation)
-lifeguard (supervisor now) (~10 hrs/wk in school year)

Any suggestions about getting into olin?

(copied from my post in chances forum)

First off, check this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=228626 for a similar discussion.

Based on your scores and extra-curriculars, you look fairly competitive. However, Olin takes into account the courseload your school offers, what percentage at your school receives above a 4.0, etc. If you really want to get into Olin, try and schedule an interview (if they're doing them) before your application gets submitted so that the Admission Officers can put a face with your application. Then write a kick-ass essay. Keep taking as hard classes as you can senior year; colleges don't appreciate someone who slacks off senior year.

There are so many other things that other Olin students/alumni will probably offer as well. I think my key point of advice is figure out how to show Olin what you can bring to it and what getting into Olin will do for you.

Just curious: are 1st semester senior grades considered in the initial application assessment? I'm in all ap's this year, and am a little worried about english (it'll probably be a B - i skirted by with barely a 90 both semesters of AP English Language last year). I know Olin looks at more than just GPA, but it would look good to have a 4.0 UW for applying. It would be nice to be able to focus on math/science/application essays more rather than worrying about grades every waking minute (I'd stilll probably get all A's except english - I'd just enjoy my classes more for the joy of learning vs. getting a good grade).

p.s. I know I'm weird for worrying about English vs. bc calc or physics or bio, but this is the Olin thread. Enough said :)

Thanks

They want the first marking period grades. Eventually they'll want a copy of your first semester transcript, but they need a progress report at a minimum. You should be fine with a B in your senior english, assuming you're taking a bunch of AP or difficult classes as well. Focus on making your essays sparkle! And don't forget to include all your extracurriculars/community service in your application.
