OMG, I just got deferred -- now what!

@gibby THANK YOU!!!

@Hunt wow great advice…as I parent I never considered that approach to college applications

@doublebach, we were advised to apply to 2 EA schools, and the acceptances that came after the ED deferral were a godsend. It was reassuring to know that there were schools where DC was wanted and where he’d happily go while waiting for RD results. It’s so easy to wonder if you have terribly miscalculated after getting not good news.

You can’t apply to other EA schools if you apply to an SCEA school.

@Houston1021, that’s not true. There are exceptions

DS applied, for example, early to Yale and UMichigan, legally

I should have qualified my statement above with the limited exceptions as stated. However, a student cannot apply EA/ED to a another Ivy or to a private college such as U Chicago that has EA 1.

@Houston1021, understood. I actually encourage students to apply to another school early. While it is not the case that UVA or UMichigan is a safety for anyone, and perhaps not even a match, but for credible Yale applicants these schools can offer some comfort and reassurance if they’re deferred or rejected by Yale and are accepted there.

Hindsight is 20/20. My D’s counselor encouraged her to apply to UT Austin our state flagship, but my daughter was not interested in applying or attending.

Does anyone know the name of the Houston/Texas regional rep? Should the letter of continued interest be addressed to the Dean of Admissions or to the regional rep?

^^ You can address the letter to “Dear Officers of Admissions” or Dear Yale Admissions." Either one would be fine; there’s no need to address the letter to your regional rep.

Thank you! My daughter headed the advice above. She refocused her efforts in December and January and applied to a number of great match and schools and one safety where she is a strong legacy. She is sending a letter to Yale, but is now more focused on her match schools. It is a long wait until March.
