sv3a is as "different" or "diverse" of a background as anyone here...I don't know that "ignorant" is the word you're looking for.

Well, I could care less if sv3a is as 'different' or 'diverse' as anyone here because I do not know this person to make any assumptions. But I do have one question: Do you REALLY think that giving urms and others who aren't represented well (rural backgrounds, poor and etc.) scholarships prevents UVa from becoming an elite school?

I don't think anyone here is saying that scholarships for urms PREVENTS UVa from becoming an elite school. I don't think that was ever implied.

Rather, merit scholarships to attract more top students WILL help elevate UVa.

Well, I don't care about the fact that you are a URM either so why bring that up?

The point is that UVA isn't providing a basic service that almost all top schools provide, except for the Ivies, and there are no signs that it will do so even if it gets all the money in the world.

You've already essentially assumed I had an 'ignorant attitude', and borderline-assumed that I didn't enjoy racial integration, neither of which are true.

Well, I won't be as quick to assume that you're against racial integration but I don't still don't understand why you think that giving urm scholarships is such a bad thing. If anything, you could've just said that UVa needs to put more money into merit scholarships which they should, I am not against that.

However, when comments like:

"With this money we can give out 1000000 more scholarships to URMs and phase out all other groups at the university."

are posted, it gives a negative connotation or reflection so I am wondering where you were going with this comment.

I also wonder why in a lot of threads on this school board why race always has to come up in discussions when it really isn't necessary.

That is all I have to say.

UVa endowment numberfor the ifscal year is mentioned in this NY Time article.
