Omg, Top Schools?

=]

Sorry about my lame title.

Anyway. Lately I've been on forums, such as this one, and notice that people are starting to think that just because they don't have a certain SAT/ACT score, or a lower than average GPA, or even lacking leadership in extracurriculars, that this will ruin their chances at top schools. UCs (UCB and UCLA) for instance, from what I've seen on the updated statistics, do not always choose TOP students, but students in the median or below.

Is it possible to say that even though numbers are important, the way a student sets themselves apart from other applicants is more important? I found that one way students are doing this is through their personal statements.

Sorry if this doesn't fit in with the category. Just needed some opinions. (:

WashU in St. Louis is a school that isn't obsessed with numbers. Plenty of people with top of the line grades and scores get rejected/deferred. It's a very good school and if you show interest but don't have the "numbers," you have a better shot than most other top notch schools. I hope that's what you were asking for.

Not really, but thanks anyway.

Any other schools that look less on numbers
and more on effort?
