Anyone reading (or recently read) anything interesting?

crime and punishment

I've been saving Crime and Punishment for when I become fluent in Russian. (most likely---never.)

Other than that, how about Beloved?

Heart of Darkness

Conrad's style is so beautiful. Ah, his writing is so perfect, I love it.

I'm reading Crime and Punishment in school right now...Sadly, my enjoyment of the psychological wanderings and contemplations of Raskolnikov has been slightly ruined by the fact that our quizzes are centered mostly around minute detail, usually including names..."Say, was that Zossimov or Zametov?"...That aside, I think its great.

jorian-- man i totally know what you mean! i had ap lit last semester and that's EXACTLY how it was.

really, we just have to write one paper on it.

We read Heart of Darkness about a month ago and I absolutely adored it (need to read Secret Sharer and Lord Jim).
My English class is on Wuthering Heights and it's giving me my requisite Victorian kick - it's grand, though (like everyone else) I'm getting sick of the reading quizzes with their nitpicky questions. Reminds me of Accelerated Reader tests in middle school...

MzLover3 - I'm trying to learn Russian as well, but I should probably go ahead a read Crime and Punishment in translation...it'll be a while, otherwise. How are you learning it? (The guy who's teaching me promises that once I have the basics down, everything will be easy and I'm not quite convinced of this, haha)

We just finished reading Heart of Darkness, The Secret Sharer, and Lord Jim. Conrad's style really is gorgeous, but I have to say, I wasn't a huge fan of Heart of Darkness. I much preferred The Secret Sharer and Lord Jim.

AH! MzLover, Beloved is my absolute favorite book of all time!

For those of you who haven't read it, do it. NOW.

Heart of Darkness was decent. i wrong a pretty nice 4 page essay on it.. something about kurtz representing europe and blah blah blah.. but my best read this year is Pride and Prejudice.. probably because i'm madly in love with this gal who chose her education and deferred me for four years!! damn it... i never should have applied!
