On-campus jobs

My campus advertised that they need new part-time employees to work in the bistro. The description includes: flexible scheduling, competitive wages, and student management positions. I currently work at a grocery store, and I applied for this job on-campus. I figured that as a commuter, it'll save me gas money if I can go to class and then go and work for a few hours after class instead of driving to campus and then driving to my job. I start off at $7.75, which is what I make now, and then I receive "merit" raises, so I don't receive any decrease in pay from my current job to this job. I got an email from the manager, and she really wants to interview me for a position, so I think I might give it a go. Is this a good idea or not? I don't think it'll hurt to try it out, but I don't want to burn any bridges with my job that I have had for two years.

I see nothing wrong with this and don’t think you’ll be burning bridges. You’re going to college, and typically employers expect to lose their employees when they head off to college. There’s nothing wrong with doing what is best for you financially. Plus, you can always go back to your old job when you are not commuting during winter/summer break.

If you talk to your current manager and tell them that you are going off to college now and won’t be able to work now, but are interested in seasonal work you should be fine. My daughter worked at a pretzel place at the mall and then got a internship and had to tell her boss she was going to leave. He was happy for her to get a “real job”. Grocery Store managers know that people come and go at those jobs.

Sounds like a good idea. You also usually get a free meal with those shifts.
