On Campus vs Off Campus Housing - 3rd yr

I need some advise from upper clansman or parents of that group.

S2 will be 3rd next year, I believe he has to make decision about housing in Feb 2010. I know for a fact majority of the upper clansman move off campus. The main reason probably is the cost. How to student go about renting an apartment? Do that ask around for roommates? What happen he has none then what? I know the parking lot is pretty far away, don't they still have to take the bus after they park their car? How bad is the traffic coming on to campus during morning rush hours? Or is that any good decently quiet apartment along bus route? How often is the bus schedule? Should you rent furnish or non-furnish apartment? Can somebody recommend any off campus housing. What is the difference between University Apartment?

Any upper upperclassman ever stay on campus? As it is so much more convenient. As one can sleep till the last 15 min and still make it to class. You don't have to worry about your meal if you sign up meal plan. He can come back to his room to rest in between long break between classes. Also if you have to work on long project, which probably happen more often in upper division classes in the lab, you don't have to worry about going home late and probably more secure being on campus. Obviously the cost is major factor.

with your being from so far away and having so many questions … i think it would be better to just have son stay on campus. i think there are a good number of upperclassmen living on campus. maybe not a majority, but lots do. if cost is a factor, then you could go for one of the cheaper dorms.

it can be cheaper to live off campus, but i think that is with sharing s room (just like on campus.) there may be cheaper options to live off campus and have your own room, but those would probably be in some of the not so nice places.

if son is on scholarship or in honors, then he could still stay in the honors dorm.

if he wants to move off campus and you do not want to handle the logistics, then maybe he could rent from someone who already has a place (maybe even furnished. then he wouldn’t have the hassle of finding a place and all of that.

there are many apartments. most kids who live off campus live on a bus route and ride the bus to campus. if you have a car you will still need a parking sticker if you EVER want to park on campus.

if son wants to live off campus … he should be about 20 by now … let him do the legwork and figure it out. he is a smart kid. then he can present you with options and you can say yea or nay.

many places rent for 12 month leases, so keep that in mind.

Does living off campus cost more than living in the dorms if you want to live in at least a semi-nice place?

I moved off campus as a sophomore. I really like it much better than the dorms. My three roommates are all from the Honors dorm with me and when we are home, it is a much quieter atmosphere to study. We can cook our own food(a problem with the dining hall when you have late labs)and don’t have to worry about when dorms open and close for the semester. We take the bus to campus which is not that big of a hassle at all. We all have cars, but rarely use them to get to campus on class days. There are a lot of great apartment complexes in CStat, furnished and unfurnished, and most have private beds, baths and leases. All four of us have our own lease. We toured a bunch of complexes and it really stood out which one fit our lifestyle the best. I agree that if he is going to be a junior, he is old enough to live on his own, as well as find a place on his own. Hope that helps!
