Just wanted to throw out a little encouragement and perspective to those applying and/or auditioning this season as well as to their parents.

If you're new to this board and the college MT admissions/audition process in general, it's often easy to become intimidated by some of the very fortunate students (and their parents) who have reported in on College Confidential that they have had tremendous success in the admissions process. (And many congrats to them all!) You may be thinking you'll never possibly be admitted as there appear to be a lot of very talented students who get into a lot of very good programs with a lot of very hefty scholarships. Where does that leave room for you -- especially when it's extremely difficult to know the playing field and where you fit in?

Don't despair! It just takes one acceptance to one program! Do your best and try to have faith (and fun)! If you follow some of the great advice on this board on how to select your colleges and their programs, you'll most likely succeed, even it you get into only one program!

Remember that not every student will have their pick of the litter but will probably get into one and if they're really fortunate, maybe one or two more programs.

I hope this is helpful and encouraging to those who may be getting a bit anxious right about now. I know that I did last year about this time when my D was auditioning! :)

Great post....and the bottom line is that you can only attend one school after all! It is nice to get options, but in the end, you only need one school. If you have built an appropriate balanced list, it should yield at least one acceptance. So, go into this with an open mind about all your schools (rather than thinking any certain school is a "must have") and also while it is unnerving to not know where you will be admitted, remember that you will get into a college and have some place to go next year. Things turn out one way or another. It isn't a contest to see how many you get into. It is about going to college next year and as long as you have a school to go to, it should work out if your list is built with schools that you like enough to attend. You may not have a choice but usually even when someone doesn't get into their favorites, they end up loving where they land. So, keep things in perspective and try not to pine away for a certain school. Remember that rejections go with this territory. With low acceptance rates, even the most talented kids will get some rejections. A rejection doesn't imply you don't have what it takes and so stay the course. You only need one acceptance. Anything after that is gravy. Getting into a favorite is like a cherry on top but should not be the main goal. Most applicants WILL land somewhere but simply do not know where yet. But you WILL land. Break a leg! (thanks NewbieMTMom for reminding this year's seniors and their parents of this during what can feel like an overwhelming time). You guys will make it through, promise.

Great post Newbie. And let me add that often the FIRST letter or even two is a rejection. If this happens to you it isn't ominous!! also there can be no rhyme or reason as to who accepts and who rejects. It's easy to second guess and think if someone doesn't get in one program they probably won't get in another - not so AT ALL...look at the history in the past. Just have fun and forge ahead. You'll end up exactly where you are suppose to be.
