One Bad Grade

I am applying to three prep schools this year, Hotchkiss,Deerfield, and Episcopal. I got a B in Honors Geometry first trimester, but I have all A's in the rest of my classes. I should get a good recommendation from my teacher. How much will this affect my chances of getting in to rep schools?

Don’t fret. The schools will consider your entire application. Grades are just one piece of the puzzle.

math2K: You might want to cast your net a little wider unless you are ONLY willing to go to one of the 3 schools you mentioned. Regardless of perfect grades, recs and scores, many many applicants are still rejected or waitlisted at these schools. If it’s prep school you want, there are also many other excellent schools that are not quite as selective. There is lots of great info on this forum. Best of luck to you!

Unfortunately, my parents are opposed to me going to boarding school, and will only let me apply to three schools. I am also applying to three local schools where I live which are not as selective.

To the OP: Did you merely want reassurance or advice? Because cameo43 is giving some smart advice and it sounds to me like you’re looking for unqualified reassurance.*

The point (I think) is that there will be kids with no weaknesses in their transcript who will get rejected. So all things being equal (which they hardly ever are), a school might pick the kid without the B.

That said, I also support Pops2017’s advice. Because after all, what can you do about it now anyway?

*Note that this is NOT exclusive to you. I find that many people come on the forum looking for the answer they want, not the answers they get.

Thinking about it now, I guess I was looking for mostly reassurance, but I am now thankful for the advice I have gotten, even if I am not able to take it. I also live in a very good school district, so no matter what happens, I’ll be fine. Thank you for all of your advice everyone!

Not all B’s are created equal.

What GMTplus7 said. Also, a B is not a bad grade.
