One class away from graduating, & being told I can't enroll. Can't afford to stay another semester

Hi everyone,

I’m a senior at Stony Brook, I’m literally one class away from graduating. I was told last semester that I was in good shape and given that I pass all my classes in the spring, I could graduate on time.

However, I cannot get off the waitlist for one of the classes because now I’m being told I no longer meet the pre-reqs of the class. This is crazy because I’ve literally taken the class before, WAS enrolled on SOLAR and am just retaking it right now so that I can get the C I need to fulfill this major requirement. I failed it previously due to an extenuating circumstance (death in the family :/).

I’ve literally spent a week and a half on a waitlist only to be told that I couldn’t actually be enrolled at all. I can’t afford to enroll in a summer class or an additional semester because I am seriously in debt (~$100,000) and am an out of state student.

What is your advice? Please help me!

Go to the chair of your department immediately and ask what can be done. If they can’t get you in ask if you can do an online summer class and transfer it back. You may need to talk to the Dean of Students too.

This happened to me my senior year, similar story. It was first semester, though. I explained what happened and admitted my mistakes (I had made one…dropped a class and substituted another one, but what I dropped was a requirement). He agreed to waive that requirement. Then later, second semester senior year turns out I was still two classes short (this was in the dark ages when we couldn’t use a computer program to see how on target we were for graduatiing, and a large school with I guess not great counseling or I didn’t use it), anyway…I took a class at my local college in my hometown over the summer and did one correspondence course to finish up the requirements, sent it in and my diploma was mailed.
