These are 4 schools I am very much considering. Can anyone weigh pros and cons? Would be so appreciated. A little lost...

State University Vs. Liberal Arts???

COLORADO:

University Colorado-Boulder
Colorado College

WASHINGTON:
U Washington
Whitman

Insight would be greatly appreciated :)

From your list, you seem to be all over the place. Do you want research or writing-intensive classes? Do you want lots of people, or an intimate environment? Do you need financial aid? Are you in-state for either school? What do you expect as a major?

The pros and cons have little to do with the actual schools you are considering but instead involve deciding between an LAC and a large research university (public or private, does not matter as all research unis share similar characteristics). You could substitute Grinnell for CC and Iowa for CU. Or Mac for Whitman and Northwestern for UW. The biggest diference is that one set is an LAC and the other a research uni.

Decide what type of school you like and go from there. There are countless threads here on the differences/advantages/etc of one or the other.

Can you afford to pay the OOS rates for (at least one) public U?

You know, it is perfectly valid to be interested in different types of schools in different locations for different reasons. This obsession with deciding precisely which environment one wants can be a little overdone, IMHO.

Colorado College is very unusual in that students take one class at a time, according to my understanding. The pros and cons of that are pretty clear. I don’t know much about the University of Colorado, but Boulder is supposed to be a great town. It always seems that most OOS students who choose to go to schools in CO are outdoorsy and/or skiers/snowboarders.

With Whitman vs UW you have a more straightforward LAC vs Big Uni comparison. UW has the advantage of being in Seattle, which is a cool city.
