As my S is now on his way home after his freshman year, I thought I'd share some impressions.
DU was not his first choice. 1st choices actually rejected him (Ouch) They were both in the top 10 LACs and I'm thinking his GPA did not make their very high standard. His test scores were all well above that. The final choice was between DU and a more competitive private University. We (dad and I) were rooting for DU...better money, smaller town, a little closer to home.
1. He's not preppy at all and has made some good friends.
2. He's had to work much harder than (I think) he thought he would. The academic load is rigorous and the grading is by no means any easier than those top tier schools. (his bro is graduating from one next month)
3. He does not lack for things to do in his spare time at all. Concerts, plays, lectures, hanging out with friends. New extracurriculars. He's busy.
4. He's happy with his choice. No regrets.

Good luck to all new first years. If you can swing it at all, go to JunO. Also consider going on one of the pre orientation trips in the outdoors, arts or community service. You get to move in ahead of the hordes, get close with your own cadre of new people, and it's a great way to start off your new life in college!
