I see Oneonta has a fashion program. Any students in this program out there? How is the curriculum and professors? Internships? I am slightly skeptical of internship opportunities all the way upstate, but would like more info! Also, how is the social scene at Oneonta? Is there more to do than just go to bars and drink?

My niece is grad. in a few weeks from Oneonta in fashion merch. She has had a good experience, but had difficulty with landing an internship in NYC last summer. I know they have a program where you can study for a semester at FIT in NYC, or a semester in London. Oneonta is one of the SUNY with fashion, besides FIT i think.

vahevala, Was your niece able to find a job in fashion for after graduation or is she still looking? Did your niece do the semester at FIT or London? Thanks for replying.

Fashion: She is just finishing this December. She decided against the FIT and London, not sure why. she is not a real “go getter”! But, I think it’s a good sign that she was able to finish in 3 1/2 years. She did land a mangager position in the mall, nothing great yet. Hopes to start up her own childrens clothing shop in town. Have you visited? I think I would have taken advantage of the FIT semester for sure, it is a great opportunty and the price is not that much.

Vahevala,
I am also interested in FIT but I was thinking going to Oneonta and studying for the semster at FIT might give me a bit more of the traditional college experience. University at Delaware has a similar program but is more expensive and may be a reach for me depending on how well I do on my SAT. I am a junior now and Oneonta is on my list of schools to visit in the spring. The upstate location is a bit of a negative for me but I am open to seeing it.

I think that your plan is very good. Are you from NYC? The location of Oneonta is really nice. The town is cute, and quaint with some restaurants and bars. Then there is the other area which has all the Walmart, grocery etc. So you can get anything you need. Oneonta is up on a hill, the campus is nice in the SUNY kind of way. There is another small college right down the hill from Oneonta (can’t remember the name) so there is a “college town” kind of atmosphere. My niece is not a big partier, so it took a little time for her to find her niche. But, I think for the money you can’t go wrong esp. if you take advantage of the FIT thing. My D was interested in fashion merch. but changed her mind so I am familiar with the programs.

My daughter graduated from Oneonta this past May, but not in fashion merchandising. She did go to Oneonta though with a HS friend, who majored fashion, and did her last year at FIT. This young lady is currently employed in NYC in the fashion industry.

Thanks for the advice and info everyone. I still have to take my SAT’s and see which schools are realistic for me but Oneonta and New Paltz are definitely on my list of schools to visit. I know New Paltz does not have fashion Merchandising but I was wondering whether the proximity to NYC would allow me to do fashion internship and major in business. Good to know Oneonta grads are getting jobs.

Hartwick is also in Oneonta

Internships can be done in the summer. So it doesn’t matter where the college is located. My D1 went to Cornell, further upstate than Oneonta. She still interned in NYC for two summers.

I am very familiar with the Division of Economics and Business program at Oneonta. Many Oneonta students intern in NYC and other cities during the summer.

Just because Oneonta is located upstate does not mean they do not have connections in other places such as NYC.
