Such and such teacher posts on Only Fans and then ultimately gets fired or forced out.
They are not advertising this. It’s separate from their work life.
Is this right ?
I say no - unless maybe it’s a church school with a conduct contract but if you’re doing nothing illegal and it’s not impacting your work performance, then whether people like it or not, why should it matter ? Why should this person lose their full time job ?
Yes many teachers here have second/side jobs as well. My local govt employer allows seconds jobs, but you must declare it with HR to make sure there’s no conflict of interest and that the second job will not take priority over your first job. (I.e. can’t call in sick because you have to work at the other job)
The amount of money you make doesn’t matter. The people I know who were fired over the years for it 1) didn’t register with HR but more importantly. 2) a couple of people were using their local govt job to drum up business (while performing local govt job duties) and another was doing second job during local govt job using govt equipment and also using insider knowledge so to speak.
Someone in my office just bought his family’s trailer park (for a huge discount). Once the mortgage is paid off in 10 years, he says it will make him well over $100K a year which is double his current salary. HR doesn’t care about the $$$
I read the article more closely. The teachers contracts might have some vague clause about moral behavior outside of school hours. H’s might though it’s been years since I read it.
Oh, I could see it being a real “distraction” once the word has gotten out to the students. I’m sure there are varying opinions of what is appropriate regarding a second job but some employers certainly do have regulations.
I guess it’s a question of where do the lines get drawn when working closely with minors? It could be a concern for some parents, students, administrators but not others. I think there probably should be a line regarding employment of similar nature but I’m not sure where it should be drawn.
Would it be appropriate to have an individual that moonlights as a porn actor or actress teaching elementary school children? Would everyone want them working in a child care center or as a youth sports coach? What should be “acceptable”, where should a line be drawn? I imagine we all have ideas relative to our own children, grandchildren ,and what we might prefer/accept.
If it’s distracting to the students or their parents, why is that the teacher’s problem?
While I wouldn’t want what you described, it would not be my place to tell them no. There are a lot of people in society whose beliefs don’t align with mine, but they are entitled to their beliefs.
But it is an interesting question and we continue to see this more and more.
So, if you wouldn’t want what I described then what? Should it just be a free for all? What should be the line? I think that’s the real question.
You say you’ve never been on only fans, me either. As I understand it, much of the content has shifted to NSFW, adult entertainment. Now, that may or may not be the case here, but it certainly sounds like it is.
Again, if a man is on there posting videos of himself earn some extra money is that going to be controversial when he is also an elementary school gym teacher? Where’s the line?
Everyone is about individual rights ? I actually am.
Yet we Don’t want to sell a cake to a gay couple? Don’t want men to wear women’s clothing ? Don’t want the truth taught in school if it shows warts related to our history?
My opinion is she shouldn’t lose her job, that it’s not her problem that dads or kids may be turned on, that some in the community will think she’s immoral.
But it’s an interesting question or topic. And you bring up an interesting scenario. I say if he’s not breaking a law, while it might not be comfortable, I don’t feel he should lose his job. But would I be bothered he was in the presence of kids. Yes. But he has rights…or should have.
There was recently the democrat candidate for house in Virginia whose only fan presence was leaked. People want to say it’s bad. It’s not my thing but if she’s happy and the people who are paying her are happy - I guess I’m happy too. What if she’s having a fling ? Is that cause for firing ? Is it anyone else’s business ?
Well, if you are bothered then odds are others are bothered too. In a public service position the public should have some say.
Do people have a “right” to do whatever they want regardless as long as it’s not illegal? Some employers certainly do curtail what their employees can be involved in. It’s seen as a condition of employment.
Many employees need to have outside work approved beforehand. I’m sure the stipulations vary widely as well as the limitations.
I would imagine most people taking risks regarding outside employment and it’s potential to impact their regular job have thought about the potential ramifications. If not, these stories may serve as an indication of what they might expect.
I don’t necessarily agree with all the limitations imposed by my employment but I do recognize that I have to abide by the regulations of my employer. I’m always free to seek other employment if I don’t agree.
Teachers in VA sign a very long, mutli page contract every year. It would be interesting to know exactly what is in it. I’m sure that’s what the school district’s lawyers are reviewing now. I’m also guessing most people, like H, only read the school assignment and salary before signing.
We have a ~50 page employee handbook that we sign every so often once it’s updated. All the rules and procedures are described in there.
Personally, I’d be fine with a policy of if it is legal work and properly disclosed under whatever contract they have, then it should be allowed. The teacher or school official with a side job as a stripper, porn star, or whatever just doesn’t bother me. Because I don’t think that is relevant to whether or not they can be a good teacher or school official.
My off the cuff opinion is that if an employer makes sure prospective employees understand the contract expectations exist, and the expectations are pretty clear and enforced fairly, I can live with this type of thing. I also believe the enforced fairly part is really important, difficult and hard to do/measure. For example, I have no idea what she did, but let’s say she created videos where she was “dressed” but in not much. Is that any better or worse than an employee having an affair with another consenting adult? Any better or worse than high level government officials being allowed to run for office or continue to hold office when they use things like the “p” word in public conversation discussing women? There are lots of examples we could debate. It would also help if the contact stated how enforcement decisions were to be made.
I have worked at places where I had to agree to limit behaviors or activities many would argue are “basic,” but I knew the expectations going in, and they were non-negotiable. It was OK with me, and I never had any problems.
I read about one school recently that had students ( seniors, over 18) also making money on the site.
I think it is very hard for public schools to enforce any kind of standards for teachers, other employees, or students these days.
My understanding from a local social media site is that her OF includes some pretty hardcore stuff and that her students were watching it. I am not sure how that affects the student-teacher relationship. Main issue for me is that teachers need additional jobs because teacher pay is so low.
