Online Classes and Other Options

Hi everyone! This year I applied to the JHU CTY and got in a few weeks ago. I applied, because I wanted to attend the online geometry course at CTY instead of taking the course at FLVS (Florida Virtual School). Unfortunately, we can't afford it right now for the price that it's at. Well, technically we can afford it, but we're trying to save alot right now so that we don't get ourselves in a bad situation.
Anyway, I am still aloud to look for other options that aren't as expensive (anything under $500ish). I REALLY don't want to take anymore courses with FLVS. The thing is that FLVS courses are free, so I really have to find a good reason why I should take the course from someone else that charges money. Please post if you have any other programs that aren't as expensive and are known to be accepted course credit at public schools (I know that it varys).
I saw the Duke TIP individual learning. If anyone has any experience with that progrm, please post. Thank you so much!

CTY online uses Thinkwell for most high school online math, which you can sign up for directly with Thinkwell yourself, for about 150 dollars a year. You will not get the CTY tutor checking in with you, but it is the same course otherwise, and we really liked it - videotaped lectures and well designed problem progressions. We also used EPGY in the past and found that to be excellent, also check out MIT on-line courseware, which is free, and the art of problem solving website and books, which are popular with competitive math types. It has a lot of geometry.

If you don’t need credit, but DO want to understand the material, check out

Can I recieve credit directly through Thinkwell?

I’m actually having a similar problem right now. I want to study geometry myself, but is there any way I can get the credit for it just by taking a test or something?

Credit for coursework outside your school is typically granted by your current school. If you put in a request for independent study, and give your school a copy of the complete Thinkwell syllabus and a copy of your tests and scores, they may allow you credit. Our school required my daughter to pass their final exam of the selected course too.

CTY has a long discussion about getting credit for distance courses on their website: they do not give credit either, but their suggestions apply to any online courses.

Think about whether you need credit. Reasons to need credit include early graduation, no interest in taking more advanced courses. Would placement be enough? Placement would get you into a more challenging class, and is usually much easier to get.

Once my daughter placed into the advanced class, no-one asked about algebra 1 or geometry after that, and she intends to continue with additional math courses. Colleges usually require math thru Algebra II, but like to see 4 years worth of math classes, so part of the decision depends on whether your school has enough math for you to take it thru senior year.
