My girl (aged 13 & Grade 7) wants to do a writing course online. Primarily, she wants to improve her essay writing skills for school works. I found 3 courses:-
(1) CTY’s “Crafting the Essay”
(2) CTD’s “Critical Writing”
(3) CTD’s “Effective Essay Writing: Writing for Test Preparation, College Applications & Beyond”
Are these courses good? Any other suggestions? Thanks!
What is CTY/CTD? I’m asking out of personal interest because I myself want to take some writing courses (primarily creative writing) online but noncredit. Some I found weren’t “courses” per se but workshop-style critique boards, essentially forums like this one where people upload or post their work and it’s looked at by both users and “instructor” (or moderator).
Most of these are themselves just forums or message boards where people talk (type?) about things other than the writing process or review things others wrote. (Trust me, I don’t go on FanFiction.net.) But I’d be interested in what this CTY/CTD is that you mentioned; do they offer other subjects (like history, foreign language, etc.), or even other writing courses that have a more “creative” flavor to them?
I would be very careful about many of the message board type writing “classes” due to unscrupulous instructors who actually plagiarize student material to sell to other students or to publish as website content. Invest in a copyscape membership so you can check to make sure your child’s work isn’t being farmed out.
