Online Graduate School: Psychology: one class at a time?

Hello all,

Due to my profession and the path I’ve chosen, I will most likely be unable to attend graduate school, at least in person. When I get my Bachelors in Psychology (in Wisconsin) in about a year or year and a half, I’d like the opportunity to attend Graduate school to obtain my Masters in Psychology, possibly Business administration or Industrial-Organizational Psyhoclogy. Due to my stressful job (police), I don’t think I’ll be able to dedicate all the time in the world to school. So my question is this:

Are their any credited universities that offer online classes in these subjects? If so, who?

Is it possible to take one class at a time, so I can take my time getting my degree?

Is this something that is done by some people, or is it just wayyyyy out their?

Thanks again

Distance/online one course at a time is pretty common for people in education. That’s how I did most of my MS Ed in TESOL.

Start with your own department. Lots of big public universities have extensive online grad programs.

Western Governors University has grad programs in business (including HR) that may fit your needs. All classes are totally online and asynchronous (you do them at your time), and you work on one course at a time. Tuition is a flat fee for a 6 month term (about 3k per term) and you aim to complete 3-4 class each term-- though the more you complete, the fast you graduate, and that will save you money.

Why do you want a master’s in psychology?

The goal of your degree is the most important determinant to how you do your graduate degree - and whether you do one. Quite frankly, there isn’t a whole lot that a regular master’s in psychology is useful for, other than getting into a PhD program in psychology. A master’s in industrial-organizational psychology can be useful for working in industry, though, as could an MBA. Just don’t go for the master’s in general or clinical psychology.

  1. There are many accredited universities that offer online MBA programs. Also, many of them offer executive MBA programs that are specifically designed for working professionals. They’re structured so that most of the classes are on the evenings and weekends and the pace is accelerated. These programs are less common for psychology, but some of them exist.

  2. It is theoretically possible for you to take one class at a time, but it will take you FOREVER to finish. Most master’s programs are between 45 and 60 credits, with each class being worth about 3 credits - so 15-20 classes. If you take one class per semester, that’s 3 classes a year. It will take you between 5 and 7 years to finish the master’s degree. You could probably handle two classes some semesters. Definitely investigate regular part-time or executive format programs especially if you are interested in the MBA.

Thanks. I found that the State University of Michigan is the highest rated College in the nation for the past 13 years for Io psychology. And they have their master’s program completely online. I was considering applying for them
