My 17 year old (high school junior) son has been invited to go abroad and trial with soccer teams after a previous two month trial last year. He is an advanced student in a coveted nationally ranked math and science magnet program. I want to make sure I keep his academic record sound in the event he is not signed professionally overseas (or for when he is done with soccer there and will eventually attend college.) So, he needs to complete the final credits for “graduation,” though his current high school wont allow him to actually graduate if he doesn’t attend in person. With the advanced classes he has taken thus far, he can pretty easily do the junior and senior year requirements in one year. We have officially registered him as a homeschool student through our district but the district’s online classes are a joke in comparison to his transcript thus far. We are able to complete his credits with any online/ homeschooling program we choose. I want an NCAA compliant program that will be reputable to college admissions officers that he can manage himself online while he is overseas. I looked into Abeka and they said it is self led and he can manage and they will help get his transcript together. I am not sure if they would be the best but it certainly seems customer service friendly! He has 33 on ACT and will take one more time before he leaves. GPA at high school was 4.218. Advice?
I schooled my kids from home through a public online charter school that used the K12 curriculum. The lessons allow students to move through content at their own pace and my D did two years of math in the year she stayed home. It prepared her well for the time management and self-teaching aspects of college but there are no grades or rankings.
Because we did it through the state school system we didn’t have to pay for the lessons, supplies, books, etc. (in fact they mailed us a check to pay for high speed internet and a computer to use) and we also had teachers that reviewed progress, set up field trips and held online class sessions with a white board. When she went back to traditional public they took the credits and moved her up in the classes she had worked ahead in. The online public k12 school even offers college credit plus (dual enrollment). http://www.springfieldnewssun.com/news/local-education/mechanicsburg-teen-track-get-college-degree-year/jNdcQ01iZP4jrGHasmxBEK/ If your state will pay for it, the k12 program worked well for us and might be a good option depending on your circumstances
If your state doesn’t offer a public version, there is also a private international academy. One of the things I liked about k12 was the parent network which might help you make connections while overseas with families that are also schooling from home.
My son is homeschooled here in Georgia but is also taking AP classes through Georgia Virtual School.
Rereading your post, my D was not NCAA compliant at hs graduation because she had substituted a college’s sophomore level English composition course for one of her 4 hs English credits. I have heard they would allow such a substitution today but in 2014 she was ineligible (the principal informed us when she scheduled the class that would happen, but she was ok with that). If she had wanted to remain NCAA compliant she would have had to add a high school level English class to her schedule which seemed kind of silly.
