For anyone who took part in a virtual summer program last summer, would you be able to share your experiences? I’m a junior who is struggling with her summer plans, and could use some testimonials to help her decide!
Interested to hear the replies as well. Although I suspect this summer will be better than last summer in any online program. They have had a whole year to figure out how to deliver online content and interact with students.
My daughter did BOCO MTDI online last summer. She attended in person the year before. Obviously, virtual was not nearly the same as being there in person. That being said, they did a fantastic job of offering great instruction virtually. She still felt like it was a valuable experience. They understood space restraints - kids were in all sorts of different environments. We had a space for her to work in with a portable roll out marley floor. They still received individual feedback and instruction.
She applied to a bunch of programs for the summer, still waiting to hear back from 2 more. All that said, she is leaning toward in person instruction, even if the intensive is not her top choice. Mostly because it is so much more fun to be in the room.
We prioritized in person this year. Still waiting on one in person response. We have a looming deadline to accept or decline another in person one. My S did get in to Nexus, he will for sure take that one even though it is online. Just waiting for the last outstanding in person to determine if he is doing the second week.
Something we realized we had to consider for online programs is the hours they take place since we are on the west coast. An east coast program that starts at 9 am eastern time daily is a hard no.
We are still waiting to hear from FSU. Facing some deadlines too - but really want to see what happens there.
D got into Nexus as well - you are thinking that is for sure worth the online experience?
Re Nexus: My S is a sophomore and the first week doesn’t conflict with any in person program he is accepted to or waiting on. The first week is classes and the second week is audition prep. I think the first week is worth it for sure for him. But it is also one of his top choice schools for college because of their commitment to diversity and mental and vocal health. The second week, I think he would turn down if he gets in person at his remaining outstanding in person summer program. But he is a sophomore. If he was a junior, I might be encouraging him to do the second week of Nexus also. Especially because the last two days are pop song audition prep, which I think is going to get considerably more important by the time my S auditions.
What are your thoughts on contacting the schools you are waiting on to see if you are still in contention if you have looming deadlines from an acceptance? I can’t decide. I tried so hard to get my S to apply to FSU mostly because I really appreciate the lady from there who posts here! But he refuses to go to Florida in the summer. We are waiting on Point Park.
Yes! Kate Hopkins is amazing. I have 2 cousins who graduated from the MT program at TX State. My D is a junior. I didn’t know about the pop song focus in the audition week , that’s a pretty good reason attend for us.
On Friday, I will reach out to programs that are still in the running!
Good success to your son!
Our daughter did the CCM MT virtual camp last summer and enjoyed it, and this year she was accepted to Point Park’s MT camp, which is in person. For the money, we wanted her to get an in-residence experience before her senior year. There aren’t a lot of in-residence camps, though. I know Point Park is still open, so good luck!
