I took Latin I-III at school but because of a scheduling conflict I cannot take Latin IV. If I'm strong in most other areas will this affect me?

No not really, as long as you keep good grades in the other classes you should be fine. It won’t really break your application (it will be a breaking factor if you have bad test scores and other issues with you applications (lack of ECs))

explain this conflict in the additional info section of your app and you should be fine

I only got to Spanish 3 and French 2 and I will be happily attending in the fall. Hope that helps :)

yeah. this should work. they arent evil and crazy about the requirements. just email them ahead or put it in your app

You are fine. As others said, explain your circumstances in the “additional info” section of the Common App. I only took 3 years of Spanish (II, III, and AP Lang); I could have taken AP Spanish Lit, but I didn’t want to. And I got in… so no worries.

My s only took 2 (yes 2 - that is not a typo) yrs of a foreign language (German) in HS and graduated from Rice a year ago. Shouldnt be a problem.

I’m less confident about opining, but just to add to the data I took 2honors, 3honors & 5AP-Language.

Thank you so much!

good luck!

*and I got in!

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I took those three years of Spanish and I got in despite not taking a fourth. So Blythe, you do have precedents.

Rice only even asks for two. You don’t even need to explain it because quite frankly, they won’t care that you decided to drop the subject. As long as you’re still taking a near-full senior schedule or keeping your schedule less intensive for a good purpose.

I wouldn’t waste time or otherwise-valuable space to go into detail on why I decided to only slightly over-fulfill the admission requirements instead of considerably over-fulfill them.

i hated foreign languages… after 3 years of spanish in high school that was it for me. I don’t think I mentioned my experience (or lack thereof) in spanish anywhere on my application, but I was still admitted this past spring

Lol…one of the many reasons I love Rice over other schools is because they dont require you to take foreign language in college…right? So, if I am correct, why on earth would they care if you only took 3 years of language. With that said, get the 4th year if you can…

DD HATED Spanish in high school and REALLY did not want to take in college. I worked hard on persuading her to take just one more year at Rice so that she would have a decent grasp of it for future job possibilities, and the rest is history (well, history to our family… ;)) Really enjoyed her spanish classes at Rice; ended up with a wonderful mentor in the language faculty, spent a summer in Nicaragua and 5 months in Chile, and took lots of spanish classes at Rice, including a medical translation class- and ended up branching out into other languages. Moral of the story: Just because you hated it in HS, doesn’t mean you’ll hate it in college - and you may just realize the use of learning another language. (More openings for bilingual workers… )
